Newlyweds found dead in car days before celebrating first anniversary

Rachel and Brandon Dumovich, a young couple from Sharon, Wisconsin, were found dead inside a car in Harvard, Illinois, just before midnight on October 6—days shy of their first wedding anniversary. An officer approached the stopped vehicle after noticing its hazard lights flashing and discovered the couple inside. Police initially asked residents to shelter in place due to the heavy response, later clarifying there was no ongoing threat to the community.

Authorities identified the victims as 29-year-old Rachel Noel Dumovich and 30-year-old Brandon Peter Dumovich. According to preliminary findings from the coroner’s office, both died from single gunshot wounds to the head, and a firearm was recovered at the scene. Harvard Police Chief Tyson Bauman told Fox News the investigation remains active; while a murder-suicide is being considered as one possible scenario, no final determination has been made.

Rachel and Brandon’s story began long before their wedding. They met as middle school classmates and remained friends for 15 years before reconnecting and beginning to date in 2022. As Rachel shared on their wedding page, “I caught Brandon’s attention by stealing cologne from his locker and running away with it.” Brandon proposed in the summer of 2023 at Big Cedar Lake in Slinger, a place special to Rachel’s family, and the couple married on October 12, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. “We can’t wait to share the next chapter of our love story surrounded by our friends and family!” Rachel wrote when announcing their wedding.

Friends and relatives say they were inseparable—drawn to travel, the outdoors, and quiet evenings at home with their dogs, Dash and Cedar. Hours before her death, Rachel posted to Facebook, “Forever chasing sunsets. Wishing we were back in Greece,” a note that appeared to reference their honeymoon.

In tributes, Rachel is remembered as a loyal friend who loved cooking, fashion, decorating, and time by the water. Her obituary described “a strong sense of empathy, compassion, social justice, and fair play, always championing those who needed a voice,” and noted her “exuberant spirit, quick wit, and unfiltered humor.” After high school, she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and most recently worked as a Human Resources Manager at Climate Pros, LLC.

Brandon served his country in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of petty officer. Outside the military, he enjoyed RC flying, boating, snowmobiling, fishing, and hunting. His obituary noted that his time in service reflected “a deep commitment to service and his enduring passion for helping others—a quality that remained central throughout his life.”

As investigators work to clarify what happened on Division Street that night, the couple’s families and friends are left grieving a loss that feels both sudden and unfathomable.
