Why should you throw a bottle of water under the bed as soon as you check into a hotel?

When checking into a hotel, most guests do a quick sweep of the room — glancing at the bathroom, checking amenities, and making sure everything appears clean and in order. Some even check mirrors or devices for hidden cameras. But one spot is almost always overlooked, even though it can matter for both safety and cleanliness: the space under the bed.

Esther, a Dutch flight attendant with years of experience flying for KLM, shared a simple habit she relies on whenever she checks into a room. Before settling in, she throws a water bottle underneath the bed. It sounds unusual, but it’s a surprisingly effective safety check.

The method is straightforward: toss a water bottle firmly from one side of the bed and watch how it moves.
• If it rolls cleanly out the other side, the space is empty.
• If it stops abruptly or gets stuck, something may be underneath — an object, luggage someone left behind… or in the rarest cases, someone hiding.

If the bottle doesn’t roll through, the last thing you should do is kneel down to investigate. Bending to check puts you in a vulnerable position. Instead, step back, leave the room if necessary, and ask hotel security or staff to inspect the area with you. It’s a simple precaution that gives you time, distance, and control.

There’s another benefit to this trick: hygiene. Under-bed areas are often skipped during fast cleanings, making them a common spot for dust, debris, or pests. A quick bottle roll can tell you instantly whether the room is being maintained properly. If you find dirt or clutter, it’s reasonable to request a different room or ask for additional cleaning.

In short, this easy check — using nothing more than a water bottle — can help protect your safety, ensure cleanliness, and give you peace of mind while travelling. Small habits like these can make hotel stays more secure, especially when you’re far from home.
