Firefighter’s funeral postponed as grieving wife goes into labor with their second child

A devastating loss has shaken a family in Chicago, yet in the middle of that grief, a new life has brought a measure of light.

Firefighter Michael Altman, 32, died after suffering critical injuries while battling a fire earlier this month. During the emergency response, he fell through a collapsing floor and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

“While working to extinguish the blaze, Firefighter EMT Altman sustained serious injuries and was transported to Stroger Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,”

CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said during a press conference on March 17.

Michael Altman was remembered as far more than a firefighter. He came from a proud family tradition of service, becoming the fourth generation in his family to serve as a firefighter. Those who knew him described him as brave, selfless, and deeply devoted to the people around him.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Altman, and their young son. At the time of his death, the couple was also expecting their second child, making the heartbreak surrounding his passing even heavier.

Michael’s funeral had been scheduled for March 27, with family, friends, and fellow firefighters preparing to gather and honor his life. But in an emotional and unexpected turn, the service had to be postponed when Nora went into labor shortly before the funeral.

In a statement given to People, the Chicago Fire Department confirmed that the funeral service originally planned for Friday morning had been moved to a later date.

“Mrs. Altman is in labor,”

the department said, referring to the firefighter’s widow.

Even as the family faced the pain of preparing to say goodbye, they were also welcoming a new child into the world. Nora gave birth to a baby girl, Evelyn Rose, adding a deeply emotional new chapter to an already heartbreaking story.

Across the city, people have continued to show support for the Altman family, honoring Michael’s courage and sacrifice. Many have paid tribute to him as a man who gave his life while protecting others, and his death has left a lasting impact on both his department and the wider community.

At the same time, authorities have confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the fire that led to Michael’s death. As that legal process moves forward, his loved ones are now left to navigate an unimaginable mix of grief and gratitude—mourning the loss of a husband and father while embracing the arrival of a daughter he never got to meet.

It is a story marked by pain, sacrifice, and love—a heartbreaking farewell, but also the beginning of a new life.
