Chapter 1: Twelve Missing Minutes
Claire vanished while I was buying lunch.
That sounds too simple for something that divided my life into before and after, but my clearest memory is still walking across the hot sand with three lemonades and a bag of fries already turning soggy.
We had brought Claire’s six children to the beach for one final weekend before school. We were engaged, not married, but I had already begun thinking of them as mine.
Noah, the oldest, was nine. He studied every promise I made as if he expected me to disappear like the other adults who had disappointed him.
Around noon, Claire offered to stay with the children while I went to the snack stand near the pier. I was gone no longer than twelve minutes.
When I returned, the children were digging and splashing. Claire’s towel remained beside the cooler. Her sunglasses rested on top of her open book.
But Claire wasn’t there.
I assumed she had gone swimming until I noticed Noah standing motionless at the waterline, his face drained of color.
“Where’s your mom?” I asked.
