Chapter 1 – The Price of Kindness
When Peter learned my mother had left me her entire fortune, he transformed overnight. My husband of eight years started making coffee before I woke, rubbing my shoulders after work, and speaking tenderly about the grief he had barely acknowledged before the lawyer called.
Mom and I had grown distant during her final years, largely because she distrusted Peter. Whenever he described another investment or hinted that she might lend us money, she would grow quiet and study him. I accused her of judging my marriage. She only said she wanted me to see the whole picture.
Her sudden heart attack left me carrying regret alongside grief. A few weeks after the funeral, her lawyer explained that her house, retirement accounts, and savings—more than $400,000 altogether—had been left to me. I was stunned. Peter looked almost radiant.
At first, his suggestions sounded thoughtful. He wanted to replace my reliable car with a BMW, rent a beach house for the summer, and buy a larger home with a pool. Each time I hesitated, his smile became a little tighter.
Finally, over breakfast, I told him I wasn’t spending anything until I understood Mom’s estate plan. Peter reminded me that marriage was supposed to mean sharing. I answered that the inheritance came from my mother and remained mine to protect.
The tenderness vanished from his face. That morning, Peter left my coffee untouched on the counter, and for the first time I understood what Mom had been trying to show me.
