How Jon Bon Jovi Turned Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ Into a Soul-Stirring Rock Ballad

Bon Jovi approached Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” from an unusually restrained direction for Clear Channel’s Stripped series in 2007. At Hollywood’s Capitol Studios, the New Jersey arena-rock band recorded and filmed an intimate, roots-oriented power-ballad arrangement. Rather than relying on the explosive choruses associated with the group’s stadium shows, Jon Bon Jovi placed Cohen’s bittersweet words at the center of the performance.

Created during the Lost Highway period, the recording was later included as a bonus performance with some editions of Lost Highway: The Concert. A warm sound and consistent, soulful pulse take the place of arena-scale spectacle. Jon’s recognizable voice moves through the melody with heartfelt intensity, drawing emotional weight from the song without converting it into an oversized rock anthem. More than a decade before Bon Jovi entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the session showed the group working without deafening guitars.

Cohen first released “Hallelujah” on his 1984 album Various Positions. Its rise to international prominence came only after the song underwent separate reinventions by John Cale and Jeff Buckley. Admirers frequently view Buckley’s delicate 1994 interpretation as the definitive recording, but Bon Jovi’s version carried the composition to another segment of the rock audience.

The range of interpretations also had Cohen’s approval. In a 2013 interview, Alan Light—the music writer behind The Holy or the Broken—named Bon Jovi and k.d. Lang as two performers whose treatments of the song Cohen appreciated. Bon Jovi’s official site later went further, reporting that Cohen regarded the group’s Madison Square Garden performance as his favorite rendition.
