This Star Cooked for Dad’s Parties & Coped with Mom’s Fame — She Married an Actor & Escaped to a Farmhouse with Him

Natasha Richardson was born on May 11, 1963, in Marylebone, London, UK. Growing up, she always dreamed of becoming an actress, a dream she realized through a career filled with numerous accolades. Some of the notable films she starred in include “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Zelda,” “Past Midnight,” “The Wildest Dream,” “Suddenly, Last Summer,” and “Atonement.”

Initially, Natasha harbored a desire to become a flight attendant, which she later found ironic as she developed a fear of flying. Despite her aversion to air travel, she found her true calling on the stage and screen, largely influenced by her upbringing on film sets with her actress mother, Vanessa Redgrave, and director father, Tony Richardson. Her parents’ divorce brought additional challenges, as Natasha and her siblings navigated a childhood split between a wealthy, indulgent father and a financially struggling, politically active mother.

Raised predominantly by her mother in a modest house in Hammersmith, West London, Natasha’s early life was marked by turbulence and chaos. With her mother often away working or engaged in political activities, Natasha and her siblings were cared for by nannies. The instability at home led her to find solace in food and television, and by the age of 17, she had already made a name for herself in the acting world.

Family life remained complex as Natasha grew older. Her relationship with her mother became strained due to Vanessa Redgrave’s political activism. However, Redgrave always supported Natasha’s acting ambitions, in contrast to her critical father. Natasha’s ability to host and engage guests, even as a teenager, was remarkable. Friends and family recall her cooking elaborate meals and holding deep conversations with notable figures from a young age.

In 1990, Natasha married Robert Fox, but the marriage ended in 1992. She then married actor Liam Neeson in 1994, and they had two sons, Micheál and Daniel. The couple’s life in the US offered Natasha a fresh start away from the expectations tied to her famous name.

In March 2009, tragedy struck during a skiing vacation in Quebec, Canada. Natasha fell on a beginner’s slope at Mount Tremblant and suffered a head injury. Despite initially declining medical attention, she experienced a lucid interval—a deceptive period of apparent wellness following a traumatic brain injury. By the time a second ambulance transported her to the hospital, it was too late.

Liam Neeson, in Toronto at the time, rushed to her side in Montreal. There, he was shown an X-ray revealing the extent of Natasha’s brain injury. Realizing she would never recover, Neeson made the heart-wrenching decision to take her off life support in New York, where she died surrounded by family at age 45. The cause of death was an epidural hematoma resulting from blunt force trauma to the head.

Natasha Richardson’s legacy is one of a talented actress, a loving wife, and a devoted mother, remembered fondly by family, friends, and fans alike.

Her life, though tragically cut short, was marked by grace, strength, and an enduring passion for her craft.
