First Olympic Week in 3 Minutes: Celine Dion Got $0 for Performance, Simone Biles' Injury Called 'Staged,' & More

Celine Dion’s Unpaid Performance at the Opening Ceremony

Celine Dion made a remarkable return to the stage at the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony in Paris, her first performance since being diagnosed with Stiff-Person Syndrome. Teaming up with Lady Gaga, Dion delivered a powerful rendition of Édith Piaf’s “La Vie en Rose.”

Initially, reports suggested Dion would earn $2 million for her performance, including travel expenses covered by the Olympics. However, a spokesperson for the Paris 2024 Games later clarified that performers at the Games did not receive fees. Instead, technical production costs and other performance-related expenses were covered, highlighting the performers’ dedication to participating in a historic event rather than performing for financial gain.

Dion’s performance was particularly significant given her battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome, a rare autoimmune neurological disorder that causes painful and progressive muscular rigidity and stiffness. Dr. Pavan Tankha from the Cleveland Clinic noted the risks associated with Dion’s condition, such as loud noise and stress, which can trigger symptoms.

Fans reacted with a mix of support and criticism, with some praising her dedication and others questioning her decision to perform without pay.

Simone Biles Faces Criticism and Praise Amid Leg Injury

Simone Biles, the Olympic gymnast, sparked a viral discussion after missing the opening ceremony and later competing with a leg injury. Her mother, Nellie Biles, explained that Simone needed to rest before the women’s qualifier.

During the Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Qualification, Biles tweaked her calf during warmups and had to get her leg taped. Despite the injury, she continued to compete, showcasing her determination and resilience. This contrasted with her decision to withdraw from the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics finals to protect her mental health.

Social media reactions were mixed, with some accusing her of staging the injury for attention, while others praised her tenacity. Biles also became the first woman to perform the Yurchenko double pike at the Olympics, even with a taped-up leg.

Amid concerns about her injury, some also commented on her hair, suggesting different styles.

Jade Carey’s Struggle with Health at the Paris Olympics

Jade Carey, another Team USA gymnast, faced health challenges during the Paris Olympics. Carey revealed she had been unable to eat for days, affecting her energy levels and performance.

A TikTok video showed Carey struggling to land a flip, prompting concern from fans about her physical condition. Despite her struggles, Carey expressed pride in her team’s accomplishments and determination to continue.

Fans noted Carey’s pale appearance and questioned whether she should have been replaced in the competition.

Simone Biles’ Earnings and Olympic Payouts

Reports have outlined the financial rewards for athletes at the Paris Olympics. While the International Olympic Committee does not provide prize money for medals, participating countries offer cash bonuses. The US ranks tenth, offering $38,000 for gold medalists, $23,000 for silver, and $15,000 for bronze.

Despite the modest Olympic payouts, Biles is among the highest-paid female athletes, with significant earnings from endorsements and other activities.
