SAD LOSS. Legendary actress passed away

Susan Backlinie, a talented actress and stuntwoman best known for her role as the first victim in Steven Spielberg’s iconic film Jaws, passed away at the age of 77. The news of her passing was confirmed by her convention agent, Matthew Templeton, who expressed deep regret and gratitude for the outpouring of condolences. He also requested privacy for the family during this difficult time.

Backlinie rose to fame when Spielberg recognized her exceptional swimming and diving abilities. At the age of 28, she transitioned from working with animals and engaging in water-based activities, such as performing as a mermaid at Florida’s Weeki Wachee Springs, to becoming an actress. Her unique skills, which included experience with wild animals like tigers and bears, caught Spielberg’s attention. Confident in her abilities, Backlinie approached Spielberg and pitched her expertise, suggesting that her involvement would enhance the film’s realism. Spielberg acknowledged her potential, stating in Laurent Bouzerau’s book Spielberg: The First Ten Years, “I went to stunts to find the perfect stuntwoman, and Susan was up to the task.”

In a 2017 interview, Backlinie recalled her experience working with Spielberg and shared what he told her before filming the legendary scene in Jaws. She remembered Spielberg saying, “When your scene is over, I want everyone under the seats with the bubble gum and popcorn.” Backlinie’s portrayal of Chrissie Watkins, the character who meets a tragic fate in the opening moments of Jaws, left an indelible mark on audiences and contributed to the film’s status as one of the most memorable and terrifying movies of all time.

Following her passing, social media was flooded with tributes from fans and colleagues alike. Jeffrey Kramer, a fellow cast member from Jaws, reflected on her kindness and the significant impact she had within the Jaws community. Fans praised her unforgettable performance, with one remarking on her portrayal of Chrissie Watkins as “the most memorable tug on the leg in movie history.” Another fan shared how Backlinie’s role in Jaws sparked a lifelong fascination with sharks, leading to experiences such as cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa and Australia.

Susan Backlinie’s contribution to cinema, particularly her role in Jaws, has left a lasting legacy. Her bravery and skill in bringing the terrifying scenes to life have earned her a special place in film history. Fans and movie enthusiasts around the world will continue to celebrate her achievements and remember her fondly. Rest in peace, Susan.
