Teen who went missing in 1998 found alive in neighbor’s cellar

An Algerian man, Omar bin Omran, who went missing at the age of 19, has been found alive after 26 years, leaving his family and community astonished. Bin Omran, now 45, was discovered in a neighbor’s cellar just 650 feet from his family’s home, according to reports from Al Jazeera.

Omar’s disappearance in 1998 occurred during the chaos of the Algerian civil war, a time marked by uncertainty and violence. Over the years, many of his relatives had come to believe he was dead, given the length of time he had been missing. However, his mother, who passed away in 2013, reportedly maintained hope that her son would one day be found.

The alleged captor, a 61-year-old man, was arrested at the scene after attempting to flee. Algeria’s Ministry of Justice condemned the crime as “heinous” and confirmed that a full investigation is underway to uncover the details of bin Omran’s captivity.

Currently, bin Omran is undergoing extensive medical treatment to address both physical and psychological trauma. In a startling revelation, he shared that during his years in captivity, he occasionally saw members of his family but was unable to reach out for help. He explained that his captor had cast a “spell” on him, leaving him unable to seek assistance.

The discovery of bin Omran was triggered by an inheritance dispute between the suspect and his brother. The suspect’s brother allegedly posted incriminating information on social media, which prompted the National Gendarmerie, responsible for policing rural areas in Algeria, to investigate. Their search led to the discovery of bin Omran.

This shocking case has raised profound questions about how such prolonged captivity, especially in such close proximity to the family, went unnoticed for so many years, leaving the community and the nation in disbelief.
