Brother Derrick, 4, and Sister Harmony, 7, Tragically Died During Hurricane Helene: Details

What began as a quiet evening for the Taylors turned into a devastating tragedy by morning. The family had no idea that the night would end in heartbreak as a powerful storm swept through their home.

Among the lives lost in Hurricane Helene were a brother and sister from Georgia, leaving their family and community grappling with profound loss. On the night of September 26, 2024, Crystal Taylor, 34, curled up on the couch with her eldest daughter, 11-year-old Cassidy, watching a cooking show. Meanwhile, Crystal’s husband, Herbert Taylor, 39, was asleep in the bedroom with their other two children, Harmony, 7, and Derrick, 4.

The family was aware that Hurricane Helene was approaching, but they were unsure how severely it would affect their area in eastern Middle Georgia. As the storm intensified after midnight, it brought strong winds, ultimately pushing through their town of Sandersville.

At around 4 a.m., Crystal’s mother called to check on the family’s safety, and Crystal reassured her that their trees were still standing, although the winds had become much stronger. A massive oak tree loomed in the backyard, shading much of the house. Herbert noticed the cover of his truck being lifted by the wind and began walking down the hallway toward the bedroom where Derrick and Harmony slept.

Before he could reach them, the house was struck by disaster. The enormous oak tree fell onto the bed where the children were sleeping, igniting an electrical fire in the process. Herbert shouted, “My babies,” while Crystal and Cassidy fled to a neighbor’s house for safety. Cassidy, although shaken, called 911 and provided their address, reporting that a tree had fallen on the house and that her younger siblings were trapped inside.

Rescue crews arrived quickly, but the massive tree obstructed their ability to reach Derrick and Harmony. Crystal watched helplessly, unable to get to her children, as emergency workers fought the flames and began working to clear the fallen tree. It took more than five agonizing hours for them to access the bedroom where the children had been sleeping. By then, the Taylors believed that their children had passed away instantly from the impact.

Herbert shared his grief on Facebook, thanking the public for their prayers and support during this tragic time. The community has rallied around the Taylors, offering not only prayers but financial support as well.

A GoFundMe page organized by family friends has raised over $45,000 to help cover funeral expenses and assist the family in finding new housing.

Other families have also experienced unimaginable losses due to Hurricane Helene. The storm has claimed the lives of at least 135 people across the Southeastern United States, with the Carolinas suffering the most severe devastation.

In one particularly tragic incident, a mother in Asheville, North Carolina, watched helplessly as her young son and her parents were swept away by floodwaters. Despite rescue efforts, many lives have been lost.

In the wake of this disaster, communities across the affected states are struggling to rebuild and mourn their loved ones. The Taylors, along with countless others, are left to pick up the pieces as they try to move forward in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastation.
