Hurricane Helene’s flooding carried the mother away, leaving her husband and 8-year-old child, who were also rushing to safety, to watch helplessly.
A sudden, explosion-like sound startled Melissa Hensley Guinn, a mother from North Carolina, and her husband Jamie Guinn. This was the start of a terrible journey that would eventually result in Jamie losing his wife and their children being motherless.
Jamie and Melissa went to find out what made the loud bang and found that the back door was broken. It was too late for Jamie to get something from the garage to block the door. The garage had already been swept away.
Soon after, the house started to fall apart, and Jamie yelled for River, their 8-year-old son who was at home with them in Minneapolis, North Carolina. They also had three other sons, named Brandon, Sebastian, and Ethan.
Even though Jamie and Melissa were keeping a close eye on things from their home that looked out over the river, the sudden turn of events caught them off guard. With little time to spare, Jamie quickly found their son River while searching through the downed house.
He saw Melissa sitting on what was left of their house when he looked up. It’s sad that this was the last time he saw her alive.
He remembered Melissa yelling at him to be careful, which made him think that another landslide was about to happen. “So I tried to grab my little boy and threw him on my back because I thought it was another slide, and by the time I turned around to try to wake myself up, she was gone,” Jamie said through tears.
Jamie remembered how scared he was when he couldn’t find his wife. He called her name and looked everywhere for her, but she wasn’t there. He asked his young son if Melissa was still there.
Even though they kept crying, she never came back, which shocked Jamie. He couldn’t even remember if their house was still standing in all the chaos.
Jamie and River were able to stay at a neighbor’s house. Even though Jamie broke his spine and hurt his head, which later got infected, he said that the emotional pain of losing Melissa was much worse.
He thought about how fast the river was rising and said it was beyond words and something that no one in their area could have expected. He didn’t even know where to begin rebuilding their lives after the terrible damage caused by Hurricane Helene’s floods.
Jamie is currently mourning his wife, struggling to grasp life without her. He reflected on the depth of their bond, sharing every day together and being deeply involved in each other’s lives.
“Just going from having that person in your life every day to literally gone in the blink of an eye, it just shows how often you might take for granted being with someone,” he shared.
It would have been their 10th wedding anniversary in a few weeks. They had been together for 17 years. He went on and on, “She was the best mother and wife we could have ever asked for.”
The couple loved the tradition of giving each other small gifts every year, and they told each other how much they loved each other many times throughout the day. “Love you more,” Jamie always replied in a playful way.
He decided to show Melissa how much he loves her by giving her a small plaque with a list of all the reasons they love each other.
Melissa’s sister Elizabeth Hensley has also been sad about her death and trying to comfort Jamie. She could tell how sad Jamie was because his wife, the mother of their four sons, and his partner were not with him.
She said Jamie was still upset about losing the woman he lived with and who cooked dinners with him and kept their house clean. Elizabeth thought about how much they laughed every day, even when Jamie’s patience was being tested.
She felt so sad that she said, “He hurts the woman he planned to spend the rest of his life with.” He will only be able to remember her for the rest of his life. Jamie, we love you. We’re so grateful that you loved Melissa so much and are a part of our family.
Their family will never be the same, but Elizabeth hopes that their relationship will get stronger. During this hard time, she wants Jamie to know how much she cares for him.
Elizabeth also asked people to be kind to Jamie, who had surgery for a head injury, and his sons as they start over with their lives. “The hard times that are coming will be hard on our family in the days, weeks, and years to come.” Please give if you can. “If not, please pray and share,” she wrote.
Jamie’s family and friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his medical bills and any other costs he may have during this hard time. Brandy Burroughs, who planned the fundraiser, said that Melissa worked with her.
She called her “a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend to everyone she knew.” She was pretty, strong, passionate, kind, and had a sweet spirit all around. Every person she touched in life will miss her a lot.
Even though Jamie has a big job to do, he is surrounded by people who care about him and want to help by giving him money, prayers, and emotional support.
