Meet the Mangiones! What to know about CEO Shooter Luigi Mangione’s Family

The main suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4th, Luigi Mangione, was raised in a wealthy Maryland household.

Mangione, who was raised in Baltimore County, graduated as valedictorian from the esteemed Gilman School in 2016. He recognized the tremendous sacrifices parents made to send their kids to the school in his commencement address.

Following his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania, Mangione’s life took a concerning turn. He reportedly became reclusive after having back surgery in 2023 and stopped talking to friends and family. On November 18, his mother, Kathleen Mangione, reported him missing due to his troubling behavior.

Five days after Thompson was shot outside a hotel in Manhattan, Mangione was caught at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9 and charged with murder.

The Mangiones are who?

The history of Maryland is deeply ingrained in Mangione’s family. The Turf Valley Country Club was acquired by his late grandfather, Nicholas Mangione Sr., a self-made multimillionaire real estate developer, in the 1970s. He then added Hayfields Country Club to the family’s holdings.

In addition, the family founded Lorien Health Services, a nursing home organization where Mangione volunteered while in high school, and owned the conservative radio station WCBM.

Through Mangione Family Enterprises, his father, Louis Mangione, oversees the family’s commercial endeavors. His two sisters, Luciana and Maria Santa, have both pursued prosperous careers as visual artists and doctors, respectively.

There were difficulties associated with family wealth. Mary, Mangione’s grandmother, died in 2023, but she left behind a substantial estate worth over $30 million. Her will, however, stated that any grandchild accused of a felony would forfeit their portion; this detail is now at the heart of Mangione’s developing legal issues.

He has two sisters.

Maria Santa and Luciana, Mangione’s two sisters, are both accomplished in their own right. According to her Vanderbilt School of Medicine profile, MariaSanta is a doctor who practices at the University of Texas Southwestern. However, according to Voyage Baltimore, Luciana is a gifted visual artist.

Luciana highlighted the significance of family when asked what she values most. “I’ve found that spending time with the people I love has brought me the most joy in life,” she said.

On the day of her brother’s detention, Luciana posted an Instagram picture of him with the touching words, “Praying for you,” according to USA Today. Since then, the post has been removed.

Several country clubs in the Baltimore area are owned by his relatives.

When Mangione’s grandparents bought the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland, in the 1970s and built the neighborhood golf course community, they made a big investment, according to The New York Times.

The family bought the Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland, in the 1980s to diversify their holdings.

Louis, Mangione’s father, was a key figure in the family business environment. According to The Baltimore Banner, he went on to become the owner of Lorien Health Services, a nursing home organization where Mangione volunteered while in high school. According to the outlet, Louis is also the head of Mangione Family Enterprises.

The family is still in disbelief.
The accusations have shocked and devastated the family. In a social media post, Mangione’s cousin, Maryland state representative Nino Mangione, expressed sympathy for Brian Thompson’s family and asked for prayers for everyone concerned.

Mangione’s arrest has brought attention to a family that has enjoyed success, privilege, and now public scrutiny.
