Kristi Noem’s surprising answer on ‘sexual relations’ with Corey Lewandowski was ‘final straw’ for Trump: report

A heated exchange during a congressional hearing has captured widespread attention online after Kristi Noem was confronted with a blunt question about her alleged relationship with Corey Lewandowski.

The moment, which unfolded during a hearing on Capitol Hill, quickly spread across social media and added another layer of controversy to an already tense week surrounding Noem’s role in the administration.

The confrontation took place while Noem was testifying before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. Lawmakers were questioning her about immigration enforcement policies and recent incidents involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

At the time of the hearing, Noem was already under scrutiny. Political pressure had been building around her handling of immigration operations and broader restructuring efforts within federal agencies.

Days later, Donald Trump announced that Noem would be replaced as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The president shared the decision publicly on social media, stating that Markwayne Mullin would assume the role at the end of the month.

According to the announcement, Noem will transition into a newly created position titled “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” part of a security initiative focused on cooperation across the Western Hemisphere. Trump is expected to outline the details of the initiative at an upcoming event in Florida.

However, before the leadership change was announced, the hearing itself had already drawn significant attention.

During questioning, Sydney Kamlager-Dove raised concerns about Lewandowski’s involvement within the Department of Homeland Security. The line of questioning quickly escalated when the congresswoman posed a direct and controversial question.

“Did you have sexual relations with Corey Lewandowski?” Kamlager-Dove asked.

The room’s tone shifted immediately.

Noem responded firmly, rejecting the premise of the question.

“I am shocked we’re going down and peddling tabloid garbage in this committee,” she replied.

Lewandowski, a longtime ally of Trump who managed the president’s 2016 campaign, currently serves as a political adviser connected to the administration. Addressing his role, Noem emphasized that he is a special government employee tied to the White House rather than someone with authority inside the Department of Homeland Security.

“He is a special government employee who works for the White House,” she said. “There are thousands of them in the federal government.”

She also insisted that Lewandowski does not hold decision-making power within the department.

Rumors about a potential relationship between the two have circulated for years in political circles, though both Noem and Lewandowski have repeatedly denied the claims. Both individuals are also married.

Despite Noem’s response, Kamlager-Dove argued that the question was legitimate in the context of government oversight.

“It is okay for you to be offended by the question,” the congresswoman said. “But it is also a real question, and you should be able to answer the question clearly and without any hesitation.”

She continued by emphasizing that the concern was not about personal matters, but about professional judgment.

“If someone is asking if you or any federal official is sleeping with their subordinate, you should be wanting to answer that question, because it is not about your sex life—it is about your judgment.”

The exchange continued later in the hearing when Jared Moskowitz raised the issue again. Moskowitz suggested that a direct denial could settle the controversy.

“I really think you need to say the word ‘no’ into the record so that you can clear that up,” he said.

Noem again rejected the framing of the question.

“I think the ridiculousness of this and the tabloids that you are quoting and referencing are insane,” she responded.

She added that the claims had been addressed before.

“This has been something that I’ve refuted for years, and I continue to do that.”

Following the hearing, reports began circulating about internal frustration within the White House. According to sources cited by the New York Post, the exchange may have played a role in the decision to remove Noem from her position.

The report claimed that Trump had already been considering leadership changes after Noem told senators earlier in the week that the president had approved approximately $220 million in advertising campaigns featuring her image.

But insiders told the outlet that her refusal to directly answer the question about Lewandowski during the hearing ultimately became what one source described as the “final straw.”

The situation highlights the intense political pressure surrounding immigration policy and leadership within the Department of Homeland Security—issues that continue to spark heated debate across Washington.

Whether the viral hearing moment will have lasting political consequences remains unclear, but it has already become one of the most talked-about exchanges on Capitol Hill in recent weeks.
