Aunt Nancy hissed, “One dollar,” behind me. Is that all? All we get is one fucking dollar, and he was loaded?
Uncle Vic laughed resentfully. “He intentionally did it. An angry elderly man.
Mom crossed her arms and muttered, “Typical Dad.” He had favorites all the time. He also kept Dahlia as a pet. She probably has something that we are unaware of.
Aunt Nancy’s penetrating gaze caused me to stiffen. Dahlia, what did he leave you? Anything? Don’t act as though you didn’t receive anything.
“I didn’t,” I said firmly. “I received the same as everyone else.”
Mom’s hand gripped my shoulder more tightly. “Are you certain? You were with him all the time. Perhaps he shared something with you.
Grandpa’s silly stories about hidden treasure and the butterscotch candies he carried in his pocket were among the memories evoked by her words. “One day, kiddo, I’m leaving you a real treasure,” he would always wink.
However, it was only a joke or game between us. Or so I believed.
