Liam Neeson, 72, opens up on retirement from action movies

Over his nearly five-decade career, Liam Neeson has portrayed a diverse array of characters, from a Jedi Master to a humanitarian member of the Nazi party, a charming widower, and a vengeful father in the Taken franchise. The latter role marked a significant turning point in his career, transforming him into an iconic action star.

Now, at 72 years old, Neeson has expressed uncertainty about continuing in the action genre, stating that “it has to stop at some stage.”

The acclaimed Irish actor’s career spans various genres, with his breakthrough role as Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List earning him global recognition and critical acclaim. Over the following years, he demonstrated his range, from romantic leads to his portrayal of a Jedi Master in Star Wars. In 2008, Neeson took an unexpected turn, stepping into the action genre with Taken, a decision that paid off immensely.

At the age of 56, Neeson redefined his career, proving his enduring appeal as a leading man in action-packed films. His portrayal of Bryan Mills, a retired CIA operative on a mission to rescue his kidnapped daughter, resonated with audiences worldwide. The film’s gripping phone scene, where Mills delivers a chilling threat, became an iconic moment in modern action cinema.

Taken was a massive success, spawning two sequels and paving the way for a series of action roles that solidified Neeson as a late-career action star. Reflecting on the film’s impact, Neeson noted, “It just seemed to have touched something in the psychic nerve of moviegoing audiences.” Directors and collaborators have praised his ability to convey depth and vulnerability within these intense roles. Hans Petter Moland, who worked with Neeson on Cold Pursuit and the upcoming Thug, remarked, “When he’s immersed in the character, you see the hurt, you see the pain. He becomes that man.”

Despite his success, Neeson recently announced his intention to retire from action films, citing his age and the physical demands of the genre. Known for performing many of his own stunts, Neeson’s collaboration with longtime stunt coordinator Mark Vanselow has been a cornerstone of his action roles. Vanselow choreographed fight scenes and ensured Neeson could perform safely while delivering authenticity. “You can’t fool audiences,” Neeson said. “I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me.”

Neeson has hinted that he may step away from action films by the end of 2024, signaling the end of an era. However, he appears to be gearing up for another transformation—this time, as a comedy star.

He recently completed filming a reboot of The Naked Gun, the 1988 crime spoof comedy originally starring Leslie Nielsen. In the upcoming film, scheduled for release in 2025, Neeson takes on the role of Frank Drebin, joined by Pamela Anderson. Reflecting on the experience, Neeson expressed admiration for his co-star, saying, “I’m madly in love with her. I can’t compliment her enough. She’s funny.” Despite his doubts about his comedic abilities, Anderson praised him, noting it was difficult to keep a straight face during their scenes together.

Neeson’s career has been defined by reinvention and versatility, and his transition from action films to comedy could mark another intriguing chapter. What do you think about Liam Neeson retiring from action roles? Share your thoughts and join the conversation!
