Gene Hackman’s Death: Pathologist Shares One Possible Explanation After Autopsy

The sudden death of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, has left many unanswered questions. While authorities have ruled out foul play, a forensic pathologist has suggested a possible explanation for their tragic passing. The entertainment world is mourning the loss of the iconic actor and his wife, a classical pianist, who, along with one of their dogs, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home on February 26, 2025. Hackman was 95, and Arakawa was 65.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that there were no immediate indications of foul play but did not provide a cause of death or specify when the couple might have died. The circumstances surrounding their deaths remain mysterious. Hackman, who had lived in Santa Fe since the 1980s, married Arakawa in 1991. The couple maintained a private life in their secluded home. Before their bodies were discovered, deputies had arrived at their residence on Old Sunset Trail in response to an unspecified report, though it remains unclear whether it was a welfare check or a call for assistance.

Authorities found the couple’s lifeless bodies during the visit. Investigators pieced together a timeline and determined that Hackman’s pacemaker had stopped functioning on February 17, leading them to believe that he may have been dead for nine days before being found. Sheriff Mendoza told reporters that it was a reasonable assumption that February 17 was the last day of Hackman’s life.

Hackman and Arakawa were discovered in separate parts of the house. Arakawa’s body was found in the bathroom, near a space heater, with an open bottle of pills beside her. A search warrant affidavit noted signs of “mummification,” suggesting she had been dead for some time. Hackman, found in another part of the home, showed similar signs. Meanwhile, two of the couple’s dogs were found alive inside the residence.

One of the most pressing questions is who passed away first. Sheriff Mendoza admitted that it was difficult to determine. Initially, Hackman’s family suspected carbon monoxide poisoning as a possible explanation for their sudden and simultaneous deaths. However, authorities ruled this out after toxicology tests found no traces of the compound in their systems. Despite the unusual circumstances, investigators found no signs of forced entry, violence, or struggle.

A leading forensic pathologist has offered one possible explanation. Dr. Michael Baden, former chief medical examiner of New York City, suggested that Hackman’s death may have been caused by cardiac arrest, a theory supported by the fact that his pacemaker stopped recording activity on February 17. Speaking on Fox Report, Baden explained that pacemakers track pulse rates and discharge when they drop too low, leaving a record of the event. The autopsy found no external injuries or signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, but Hackman had a history of severe coronary artery disease and high blood pressure, both common causes of cardiac events.

Baden also theorized that Arakawa may have died while attempting to help her husband. He suggested that after finding Hackman unresponsive, she might have rushed to retrieve his blood pressure medication from the bathroom. According to a search warrant affidavit, authorities found bottles of thyroid medication, blood pressure pills, and Tylenol near her body. In her haste, Baden speculated, Arakawa may have slipped, struck her head, and suffered a fatal internal brain injury that was not immediately visible. Another possibility is that the shock and stress of the moment triggered a fatal cardiac event, though Baden leaned toward the likelihood of a head injury.

Authorities believe Hackman may have collapsed unexpectedly. His body was discovered near a pair of sunglasses and a walking cane, leading investigators to conclude that he had suddenly fallen. The situation inside the home became even more complex when a deceased German Shepherd was found in a closet inside the bathroom, about 10 to 15 feet from Arakawa. Meanwhile, two other dogs were found alive—one near Arakawa’s body and another outside the home.

Baden initially considered carbon monoxide poisoning as a possible cause of death, but investigators later determined that the deceased dog had likely died from dehydration after being confined in a kennel for nine days. The couple’s reclusive lifestyle may have contributed to the delay in emergency response, as there was no one immediately available to call for help.

The circumstances surrounding Hackman’s and Arakawa’s deaths have made the tragedy even more shocking, given the actor’s legacy. As one of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars, Hackman’s passing marks the end of an era. The two-time Academy Award winner, best known for his roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven, left an indelible mark on the film industry. His contributions to cinema will be remembered for generations to come.

News of Hackman and his wife’s deaths has sparked an outpouring of emotions online. Many fans are struggling to process the loss, with social media flooded with tributes and speculation. While some expressed sorrow over the actor’s passing, others focused on the lingering mystery surrounding the circumstances of their deaths. One fan simply wrote, “Heartbreaking,” while another reflected on Hackman’s long and influential career. Some, however, couldn’t shake the unanswered questions, echoing the very concerns that investigators are still working to resolve.
