Gas company investigating Gene Hackman’s death

Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico, continue to investigate the deaths of esteemed actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, 65. The couple was discovered deceased in their residence on February 26, 2025, alongside one of their three dogs. The circumstances surrounding their passing have been deemed suspicious, prompting a comprehensive inquiry.

Maintenance workers conducting a welfare check found the couple’s bodies after noticing the front door was open and unsecured. Hackman was located near the entryway, while Arakawa was found in a bathroom. An open prescription pill bottle was reportedly near Arakawa’s body, with pills scattered on the floor. Additionally, a space heater was situated close to her, raising questions about its potential involvement in the incident. Of the couple’s three dogs, one was found deceased, while the remaining two were alive and in good health.

Initial assessments ruled out both carbon monoxide poisoning and significant gas leaks as causes. The Santa Fe Fire Department and the New Mexico Gas Company conducted a preliminary investigation, discovering a minor gas leak near a stove burner, registering 0.33 percent gas in the air. However, experts determined this level was insufficient to be fatal. Tests also showed no signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, eliminating the possibility of an undetected leak as the primary cause.

Autopsies revealed no external trauma on either Hackman or Arakawa. Authorities are awaiting the results of toxicology reports, which could take several months to complete. Investigators are meticulously examining personal belongings, medical histories, and other household evidence to determine what led to the couple’s passing.

Forensic experts have proposed various theories regarding the couple’s deaths. One suggests that Hackman, who had a history of heart disease and a pacemaker, may have suffered cardiac arrest upon discovering his wife’s body, leading to his own sudden death. Another theory posits that Arakawa might have experienced a fatal accident while attempting to assist her husband. Investigators continue to explore all possibilities as they await comprehensive autopsy and toxicology results.

Gene Hackman was a two-time Academy Award winner, renowned for his performances in “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.” He retired from acting in 2004 and had largely stayed out of the public eye, residing with his wife in their Santa Fe home. The couple had been married since 1991, and their enduring relationship was admired by many. Fans and Hollywood colleagues have expressed profound sorrow over the unexpected loss, with tributes pouring in to celebrate Hackman’s remarkable career and the couple’s lasting love.

As the investigation continues, many await further details to shed light on this tragic event. Authorities remain committed to uncovering the truth behind their deaths and ensuring that no crucial details are overlooked. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s families and friends during this difficult time.
