When your significant other not only remembers your special dates but also shows them respect and care, it’s always a pleasure. Emilia, the protagonist of our story today, is 38 years old and cannot boast of her devoted husband of 15 years having such a mindset. The woman wrote us a letter in which she related how her husband chose to attend his colleague’s birthday celebration rather than hers. Emilia detailed the woman’s epic petty retaliation in her letter, despite the story’s overall bitterness.
Adam and Emilia were once quite content with each other.
Our reader Emilia, who is 38 years old, felt compelled to share her story with us and our readers. In a heartfelt letter, the woman requested that we publish her complex family situation. The woman acknowledged that some members of her family and friends think she’s made a big deal out of nothing.
However, a number of her closest friends and family members emphatically back her and maintain that her circumstances weren’t entirely healthy. They are certain that Emilia behaved appropriately and that she wasn’t exaggerating her husband’s actions in any way. This is Emilia’s story, and she is now requesting additional opinions regarding her case.
“Hello, Bright Side!” Emilia wrote. Adam, my spouse, is 45 years old, and I am 38. We’ve been married for more than 15 years, and I never would have thought that my cherished spouse would do something so egregious and daring as to be disrespectful to us. Since we have developed such essential qualities as empathy, respect, and mutual assistance, we have been very content in our marriage. I did believe that our family was perfect until recently and that there was nothing that could cause us to have a serious disagreement. I was gullible.
The rudeness of her husband’s actions unpleasantly surprised Emilia.
“So, I was 37 at the moment when it all started happening, and my 38th birthday was approaching,” Emilia continues as she recounts her experience. The last two years had not been easy; I had experienced some severe health problems, and my mother, who I loved, died when I was thirty-six. Simply put, I didn’t have the time or desire to celebrate either of my birthdays over the preceding two years.
I finally accepted who I was and realized that I needed some joy in my life after experiencing extreme stress and depression. I made the decision to throw a party for all of my friends and family. I was eager to enjoy this breath of fresh air and spend time with my loved ones.
Even though it wasn’t an anniversary, I found this event to be very important. For months, I had been getting ready for my big 38th birthday celebration. I also believed it was important for Adam. However, I was gravely mistaken.
On the same day, Denise, my husband’s “work wife,” celebrated her birthday. She didn’t mention me when she invited Adam. Then, just before my birthday celebration, my spouse severely humiliated me. She is celebrating her 35th birthday, which is more akin to an anniversary than your 38th, so her birthday is more significant to me than yours, he declared boldly. I hope you will respect my decision to go to Denise’s party. I don’t want my disregard for her special day to offend her. When you turn 40, I will be celebrating with you, I promise.’”
Emilia was frustrated by Adam’s act of disrespect.
“I tried to persuade Adam that this specific birthday celebration was very important for me,” Emilia wrote. I wanted him to share my “back to life” moment, celebrate with me, and have fun with me. However, he obstinately declined.
“Denise is hosting a large themed party for all of her coworkers,” Adam stated. We’re very close with her at work, we’ve been doing a great job together, so for her, it will be an unpleasant shock if I don’t come to honor her age milestone. As soon as Denise and I start working closely together, our boss will also be present, and I’m positive he has something special in store for us both. You have to understand that I can’t let this chance pass me by.
“I was shocked, and Adam’s choice really made me sad,” Emilia said. During the 15 years of our marriage, I experienced the most difficult times with this man, so it wasn’t what I expected from him. This was not the display of love and respect that I had assumed he would exhibit “by default,” as this is what any devoted spouse would genuinely do. However, he made the decision to be a good “work husband” rather than a good husband.
It was really painful. However, I simply grinned and made no attempt to protest. I pretended that nothing was wrong. I didn’t lecture him or chastise him. I simply made an effort to adjust to the idea that I wouldn’t have my spouse present at that celebration.
Her husband learned a valuable lesson from Emilia.
“So, on my birthday, I was at home, hosting my party,” Emilia wrote. Adam attended his workwife’s function. I texted him in the evening to ask him not to come home tonight since “his place is occupied.”
Adam obviously started panicking, as he called me around 20 times. Of course, I didn’t pick up. He then left Denise’s party and went home to see what was going on. I met him as usual, and I was smiling as if nothing happened. When Adam asked me what was up, I looked him straight into the eye and said, in the presence of all my guests, that he’s no longer my husband.”
“I said, ’I’m not filing for divorce, Adam. I think we’re an ideal couple, at least on paper and in Facebook posts. But you’re not my husband, not my second half, and not the person who’ll make choices in my favor. I honor your desire to attend your work wife’s event, but you also need to honor my desire to do as I please.
Emilia went on, “I pointed at one of the guests, much to Adam’s chagrin. This was one of Adam’s closest friends, Derek. Derek actively participated in the development of my small business and helped me with its launch. Because Derek and I worked together and were somewhat close, I introduced him as my “work husband.”
Then I said, “Derek is the one who replaced you, Adam.” He attended my party and provided me with a lot of support. He was actually taking care of me in every way that a husband ought to. Derek agreed to accompany me on the tour I purchased to commemorate my 38th birthday. We are departing early tomorrow. It’s simply because I prefer his company to yours, nothing personal, my love.
Adam was so angry that he slammed the door and walked out, Emilia said. My MIL recently contacted me to inform me that Adam is filing for divorce because I “humiliated him,” and I haven’t heard from him in more than two weeks. What should I do given the circumstances? Is it incorrect of me to have given my husband such a harsh lesson?
Here is another example of a woman who was humiliated by her spouse on their wedding day. However, the clever bride prevented her haughty husband from taking pride in his heinous act and planned a retaliation that he is unlikely to forget.
