What we know about Rick Springfield’s brain damage diagnosis

Rick Springfield’s Health Battle: A Look at His Resilience and Ongoing Journey

Listening to Rick Springfield always makes me feel like I’m 20 years younger. His music and voice have a way of uplifting my spirit. That’s why it hit me hard when I read about his recent health issues, which were only recently discovered.

A Shocking Health Revelation

At 75, Rick Springfield is an iconic figure in both music and entertainment. Best known for his hit song “Jessie’s Girl,” he’s also had a successful acting career with roles in shows like General Hospital and The Goldbergs. His long list of chart-topping hits and his devoted fanbase have made him a beloved figure in pop culture.

However, Springfield recently revealed a shocking health discovery from over two decades ago. In an emotional interview with People, the musician disclosed that he was diagnosed with brain damage, a result of a serious fall he had 25 years ago.

“I fell 25 feet, hit my head, and then wood came down and hit my head, and then my head hit the stage again,” Springfield explained. At the time, he thought he had only suffered a broken wrist, but a full-body MRI revealed the extent of the damage to his brain. “On the scan, I found out I have some brain damage from the fall, so I’m working on trying to repair that,” he said.

The Accident That Changed Everything

The accident occurred in 2001 during a performance of EFX at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Springfield was positioned on a 20-foot-high beam, which was supposed to lower him to the stage. However, he fell 10 to 15 feet in front of the audience. Though he initially believed he had only broken his wrist, the MRI revealed the long-term effects of the fall.

Seeking Treatment and Staying Proactive

Despite the diagnosis, Springfield is taking an active approach to his health. Earlier this year, he shared that he tried ketamine therapy to help treat depression. “I wanted to see if it’d open a few things in my brain,” he told People.

Though he admitted that his past experiences with LSD had been more helpful, he credited the greatest improvement to managing his alcohol consumption. “That has actually helped more than anything,” he said.

The Loss of His Father: A Powerful Lesson

Rick Springfield’s father, Norman James Springthorpe, passed away in 1981, and his death deeply impacted Springfield’s approach to health. His father had avoided seeking medical attention for what he thought was stomach cancer, but it was later discovered to be a burst ulcer. “It could have been fixed if he had gotten it checked out,” Springfield reflected.

“That was a giant message to me: If you want to live long, you have to be prepared for some bad news now and then,” Springfield shared. “I could find out I have terminal cancer tomorrow and be dead in a year, but I can only do all I can do.”

Giving Back to Cancer Research

The loss of his father inspired Springfield to get involved in raising awareness for cancer research. He has performed multiple times for free to help raise money for cancer causes.

A Continued Journey of Resilience

Rick Springfield’s resilience in the face of personal and health challenges continues to serve as an inspiration. Whether he’s exploring alternative therapies, staying on top of his health checkups, or sharing his journey with fans, Springfield shows us that it’s never too late to confront the past and take charge of your future.
