They Took One Last Picture—No One Knew It Would Be Their Final Goodbye

Just moments before tragedy struck, a photograph captured what looked like a perfect day for a young family — smiling faces, excitement in their eyes, and a dream tour of New York City about to begin. Hours later, that same family would be lost in a catastrophic helicopter crash that has left two countries mourning.

On Thursday, April 10, Agustín Escobar — a senior executive at Siemens Mobility — his wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three young children perished when their helicopter plunged into the Hudson River near Manhattan’s Pier 40. The pilot, whose name has not yet been released, also died in the crash.

The family, visiting from Barcelona, had embarked on what was meant to be a scenic tour flight over the city. What followed was a devastating mid-air malfunction that turned their dream into a nightmare.

Witnesses reported seeing the Bell 206 helicopter break apart mid-flight, appearing to lose its rotors before nosediving into the water. The crash occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m., just off the coast of Hoboken, New Jersey. Four people died instantly at the scene, while the remaining two succumbed to their injuries shortly after being hospitalized.

Photos posted to the New York Helicopter Tours website show the Escobar family beaming in front of the aircraft, a moment now frozen in time. Another image reportedly shows the family strapped into their seats, just minutes before the crash — a chilling contrast to the horror that followed.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, with mechanical failure suspected based on eyewitness accounts.

Agustín Escobar had only recently been appointed Global CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility. With a career spanning more than 25 years, Escobar had led major projects across Spain, Germany, the United States, and South America. He was widely respected for his calm leadership, innovation, and ability to bring teams together.

Miguel Ángel López, his predecessor at Siemens, once described Escobar’s leadership as “key to Siemens’ success in the field of mobility and transport.”

His wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, was equally accomplished. She held a prominent role as a global commercialization manager for Siemens Energy, a position she had served in for seven years.

Friends and former colleagues remember the couple not only for their professional achievements, but for their warmth and devotion to their family.

“He was such a great person – kind, steady, and always there when you needed him,” said longtime friend and former Siemens colleague Juan Ignacio Diaz. “He was a loyal friend, someone you could really count on. And he never forgot what mattered most — his family.”

Diaz described how Escobar balanced a demanding career with an unshakeable commitment to being a present, involved father. “He loved his wife and kids so much. They were everything to him.”

The couple’s three children — all believed to be middle school age or younger — were described as joyful, close-knit, and full of life.

The tragedy has not only shocked Spain and the U.S. but also sent ripples through the international community. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“The news reaching us today of the helicopter crash in the Hudson River is devastating. Five Spaniards from the same family, three of them children, and the pilot have lost their lives. An unimaginable tragedy. I share in the grief of the victims’ loved ones at this heartbreaking time.”

As the investigation continues, so does the mourning — not only for the sudden, senseless loss of six lives, but for the brilliance, kindness, and love that radiated from one family now gone far too soon.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this devastating tragedy.
