Pope Francis’ final burial request breaks from tradition

Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, leaves behind a legacy defined by his commitment to service, humility, and a deep love for the marginalized. His death marks a significant moment for the Catholic Church, as it comes just one day after he had appeared on the main balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, greeting thousands of faithful on Easter Sunday. Reports had been circulating in recent months about his declining health, which had included battles with pneumonia, a complex lung infection, and early-stage kidney failure.

The Vatican confirmed his passing early in the morning of April 21, stating, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.” The Church expressed immense gratitude for Pope Francis’s life of dedication to the Lord and the Church, highlighting his efforts to live the values of the Gospel with courage and universal love, particularly for the poor and marginalized.

Pope Francis’s final burial wishes have drawn attention due to their departure from traditional papal practices. Known for his modernizing influence, Pope Francis requested a simpler burial, in contrast to the elaborate rituals typically associated with papal deaths. While popes traditionally are interred in three coffins made of cypress wood, lead, and elm, Pope Francis requested a single wooden coffin lined with zinc. Furthermore, while popes are traditionally buried at St. Peter’s Basilica, he asked to be laid to rest at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

In his final burial instructions, written in 2022, Pope Francis expressed that he could “sense the approaching twilight of my earthly life,” and requested that his tomb be simple, with only the inscription “Franciscus” marking his resting place. This request reflects his lifelong commitment to simplicity and humility.

The Pope’s death, attributed to a massive cerebral stroke, came unexpectedly after the public had been focused on his respiratory issues. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by the quiet of Vatican grounds, further echoing his preference for simplicity in life and death.

As the world mourns his loss, Pope Francis’s final wishes stand as a testament to his character—humble, unpretentious, and always focused on serving others. May he rest in peace.
