First pics of Pope Francis’ tomb released after private burial

Photos of Pope Francis’ final resting place have now been shared, offering a glimpse into the quiet simplicity he wished for in death.

The beloved former leader of the Catholic Church passed away peacefully at Saint Martha House in Vatican City on Monday morning at the age of 88. Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell made the somber announcement, his words filled with emotion as he addressed the world: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.”

Farrell went on to honor the late pope’s extraordinary life of service, adding, “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God, One and Triune.”

The funeral that followed drew around 250,000 people to Rome, including world leaders, dignitaries, and thousands of faithful mourners, all gathering to say their final goodbyes to a pontiff who reshaped the modern image of the Catholic Church. The massive public farewell was filled with sorrow, reverence, and a deep sense of gratitude for the pope who had led the Church with humility and compassion for more than a decade.

After the public funeral, Pope Francis was laid to rest during a private burial ceremony. True to his wishes, he was not buried beneath St. Peter’s Basilica like many of his predecessors. Instead, his final resting place is at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, about six kilometers away from St. Peter’s Square. It was a choice that reflected the pope’s lifelong devotion to the Virgin Mary and his desire for simplicity over grandeur.

The photos from his burial site reveal a tomb that is modest yet serene. A simple white stone marks the grave, with only the Latin inscription “Franciscus” etched into it. A single white rose rests atop the tomb, and a soft, warm light bathes the space in a peaceful glow. Above the grave, a reproduction of Pope Francis’ pectoral cross hangs quietly, a symbol of his enduring faith and humility.

The unassuming beauty of the tomb stands as a testament to the way Francis lived his life and led the Church: always focused on service, never seeking personal glorification. Archbishop Rolandas Makrickas, speaking about Francis’ burial wishes in 2022, recalled that the pope had been adamant that the basilica’s focus should remain on the Virgin Mary, not on the tomb of a pope.

In his final resting place, Pope Francis continues to embody the ideals he championed — humility, compassion, and an unwavering devotion to faith. Mourners have already begun to quietly gather, offering prayers and paying respects, drawn not just by the memory of a pope, but by the lasting spirit of a man who changed the Church — and touched hearts around the world — forever.
