Australian Actress Clare McCann Reveals Tragic Death of 13-Year-Old Son After Relentless Bullying
Clare McCann, beloved Australian actress and filmmaker, has shared the devastating loss of her 13-year-old son, Atreyu, who tragically took his own life following months of severe bullying at school. The heartbreaking announcement has sent shockwaves through the public, sparking important conversations about the dangers of unchecked bullying and the urgent need for reform.
“My Worst Nightmare Has Come to Life”
In a raw and emotional Instagram post, Clare revealed the unimaginable pain her family is facing.
“As my worst nightmare has come to life, my child’s has been stolen,” she wrote. “It breaks my heart beyond what words can compare to share that in a moment of unbearable pain, Atreyu took his own life.”
She described her only child as “the brightest light in my world — kind, creative, and endlessly loved.” Her grief is palpable, but so is her resolve to fight back in his memory.
A Mother’s Desperate Plea
Clare has since launched a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $195,000 USD (approx. $300,000 AUD) to cryogenically preserve Atreyu’s body within seven days of his death. The campaign also seeks funds for legal and medical costs, as well as to create a trust in her son’s name.
Any funds raised beyond the target, she says, will go toward pushing for anti-bullying reforms and helping other families suffering through similar tragedies.
“My 13-year-old son tragically took his own life after months of brutal bullying at a NSW public school,” Clare shared on the fundraiser page. “This was not his fault. He was let down by the school system.”
The Bullying Began Immediately
Atreyu had just entered Year 7 at South Sydney High School in early February. Within two days, Clare says he came home in tears, begging her to help stop the abuse.
What followed were months of relentless torment: physical attacks, emotional cruelty, and even an incident where classmates allegedly tried to drown him during a school camp. Despite repeated reports — at least 10 in total — to the school and the Department of Education, Clare says no meaningful intervention occurred.
“They just destroyed him,” she said. “And in a moment of immense pain, he just did something, because I think he didn’t know what else to do.”
In April, after Atreyu expressed suicidal thoughts directly to his mother, she pulled him out of school and sought professional help. For a brief time, there was hope. But the damage had already taken its toll.
“I Can’t Fail Him Now”
Clare is now hoping to cryopreserve her son’s body in a last effort to fulfill his dreams of the future. The two had often spoken about life after death — a world of imagination and possibility.
“Those were his wishes and dreams, and I can’t fail him now,” she said. “This is about hope and justice. Refusing to let my son’s story end in silence.”
A Young Talent Lost Too Soon
Atreyu had already begun to make his mark in the arts, with appearances in series like Deadly Women and films such as Black Truck and Benefited. His mother, known for her work as an actress and filmmaker — including her award-winning film Benefited — is now using her voice to shine a light on the crisis too many families face in silence.
Community Response
NSW Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car called the incident “a heartbreaking tragedy,” while NSW Deputy Secretary of Public Schools Deborah Summerhayes said counseling services have been made available to the school community. But for Clare, condolences aren’t enough.
She’s calling for systemic change — in how schools respond to bullying, how educators are trained, and how student wellbeing is protected.
