Instead of making a scene, I invited my neighbors daughter to our house the next day after hearing them discuss their affair

Mark and Lexie had been wed for ten years. She believed she had a stable life with two children and a mortgage. Although Mark wasn’t the most helpful—he didn’t help with cooking, cleaning, or any other aspect of parenting—she persuaded herself that they worked as a team. The day she returned home from the grocery store, that illusion was destroyed.

With her arms hurting and her car full of bags, she heard voices coming from the porch. The voice of Mark. Additionally, Emma, their neighbors’ 25-year-old daughter, returned to town recently with a brand-new internship in interior design. Something prevented Lexie from greeting them. Rather, she listened while concealed by the groceries behind her car.

Emma chuckled and remarked, “It’s unbelievable that she hasn’t figured it out yet.”

Mark chuckled. “Lexie hardly notices anything because she’s so focused on the kids and the housework. Have you recently noticed her hair? She makes an effort to hide the gray. She has released herself. You are everything she is not, princess.

Emma smirked flirtatiously in response. “I’m glad to be here. You can parade me all you want. This place is free of gray hair.

They then shared a kiss.

Despite having a broken heart, Lexie refrained from crying. She avoided confrontation. Through the back door, she carried her groceries, one bag almost separating from her hand. She was going to respond instead of react. with a strategy.

She greeted Mark with a warm smile the following morning, prepared his favorite breakfast, and even added cinnamon to his coffee, which he loved. As he left for work, she bid him farewell with a kiss. She then proceeded to the next room.

Emma responded with a startled expression. “Lexie! Hello!

“Hey, Emma,” Lexie said with a charming smile. “I wanted to know if you would visit us tomorrow evening. I need some assistance because I want to redesign the living room. You studied design, according to your parents, so I figured you might be able to offer some guidance.

Emma paused, then grinned. Yes! Sounds enjoyable. At what time?

“Seven is flawless. Right before supper.

Emma was dressed to impress when she arrived the following evening. She was greeted warmly by Lexie, who led her inside.

“There are a few things I want to show you before we get to the living room,” Lexie said nonchalantly.

Emma followed her around the house. You’ll have to load the dishwasher every night because Mark never uses it. This is where the laundry is kept. Due to their sensitivity to certain detergents, keep the children’s clothing separate. The emergency numbers are displayed on the refrigerator, and this is the calendar for after-school pickups.

Emma’s smile faded as she blinked.

“And here’s the kitchen,” Lexie added. You will prepare every meal. Mark prefers medium-rare steak. It must be well done—burned to a crisp, really—for the kids to eat it. I wish you luck because they are picky.

Emma’s eyes grew wide. “Wait—I didn’t agree to babysit, Lexie.”

The door opened at that moment. When Mark saw them, he froze and stepped in. “What’s going on, Lex?”

Brightly, Lexie turned to face him. “Oh! Emma is gaining experience in household management. I thought she could take over since I’m apparently such a letdown. I might go look for someone who genuinely values me.

They were interrupted by a knock. Emma’s parents, Anne and Howard, who had frequently assisted Lexie with the children, were at the door.

“Something has a wonderful scent!” “Oh,” Howard said. “I informed Anne that you would be preparing that roast chicken.”

With ease, Lexie said, “Anne, Howard.” “I appreciate you having a daughter who is so helpful. I felt it was time for her to become a true member of the family because she and Mark are so close.

Anne’s grin disappeared. “Pardon me?”

“Emma will take care of everything now that I’m taking a back seat.”

Emma’s face went white. “It’s not what it appears to be!”

Panicked, Mark dove right in. “She came onto me, Lexie!”

Lexie’s eyebrows went up. “Oh? So you’re pointing the finger at the 25-year-old you’ve been seeing in secret while disparaging your wife?

Howard’s voice was clear. “Enough. Get your stuff, Emma. We’re heading out.

Emma gave Lexie a fierce look but remained silent while her parents pulled her away. Desperate, Mark turned to Lexie. “Please, we must speak.”

“We shall,” she stated coolly. “Tomorrow. when my attorney gives a call. I advise you to begin packing.

“Where will I go, though?”

“I’m not interested. Motel. The couch of a friend. Join a traveling circus, perhaps.

“How about the children?”

For the time being, they are with my sister. You can explain what you did once everything has settled down. I’m not going to give up easily.

Lexie learned that Emma had broken up with Mark a week later. “Being a full-time mother was not what I signed up for. Not to him in particular.

Mark came back with flowers two weeks later. “Please, Lex. Our family is missed. The children. You. I was a fool.

Lexie didn’t even bat an eyelid. “The comfort is something you miss.” the ease of use. I’ve moved on. After the kids’ playdate, I’m going to pick them up. When I return, don’t be here.

In his astonished face, she closed the door.

Lexie had never felt more alive since that night. She started salsa dancing and found her joy, her spark, and her confidence again. Her and the children’s laughter filled the house once more. Every now and then Anne brought over fresh pies. As if it were therapy, Howard raked her leaves.

Mark, too? Still unmarried. I’m still lost.

Karma is a humorous person. With it, Lexie recently discovered how to laugh.
