Tragedy in Santa Catarina: Balloon Ride Turns Deadly

A peaceful hot air balloon ride ended in tragedy on Saturday, June 21, 2025, as a fiery crash claimed eight lives and left 13 others injured in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The popular ballooning destination, known for its breathtaking views, is now the site of a national tragedy.

Flames Engulf Balloon Mid-Flight

The balloon, operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, was carrying 21 people when disaster struck. According to surviving passengers and law enforcement, a fire broke out inside the basket mid-flight, forcing the pilot to initiate an emergency descent.

“According to the pilot, who is one of the survivors, a fire started inside the basket, so he started to lower the balloon,” Officer Tiago Luiz Lemos told BBC.

Desperate Plea: “Jump!”

As the fire intensified, the pilot urged passengers to jump as the balloon neared the ground. Thirteen people, including the pilot, managed to leap to safety. But as the basket lightened, the balloon rapidly ascended once again, carrying the remaining passengers into the deadly blaze.

“The flames started to grow, and because of the weight loss, the balloon began to rise again,” Officer Lemos explained. “It later fell because of a loss of suspension.”

What Caused the Blaze?

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Early reports suggest that a backup burner stored inside the basket may have reignited unexpectedly.

“I don’t know if it stayed lit or if it reignited on its own, but it was the torch that started it all,” the pilot reportedly told Jornal Razao.

Complicating matters, intense wind conditions during takeoff may have contributed. According to police chief Ulisses Gabriel, ground crews struggled to stabilize the balloon with cables, and a truck was even seen pulling the balloon side-to-side.

“It’s possible this movement caused a gas leak, which led to the fire,” Gabriel said.

Victims and Heartbreaking Final Moments

Among the eight victims were two couples, a mother and daughter, a figure skater, and an ophthalmologist. Some were reportedly found embracing in their final moments.

“It hurts the soul,” Chief Gabriel shared on social media.

Witnesses described horrifying scenes. Locals reported seeing people fall from the balloon while on fire. One eyewitness recalled:

“There were two people alive — a woman covered in mud, in shock, and a man limping. The pasture held two bodies near horses. The balloon had fallen deeper into the woods, burning.”

Rescue Efforts and National Mourning

Emergency crews raced to the scene but had to keep bystanders at a distance due to leaking gas and the risk of explosions. Thick smoke poured from the wreckage as rescue operations began.

Governor Jorginho Mello, currently on an official trip to China, declared a period of official mourning.

“We are in mourning; what happened is a tragedy,” he stated. “We will investigate why this happened.”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also expressed condolences, pledging federal support for the victims’ families.

Investigation Underway

Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) has launched a full investigation into the crash. Authorities hope to release initial findings within 30 days. All surviving passengers, including the pilot, are being interviewed.

Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos has suspended its operations indefinitely, stating:

“Even with all necessary precautions and the efforts of our experienced pilot… we are now faced with the pain caused by this tragedy.”

Renewed Scrutiny Over Ballooning Safety

This devastating accident comes just weeks after another fatal hot air balloon incident in São Paulo, where a 27-year-old woman lost her life and 11 others were injured. The two tragedies have ignited urgent conversations about ballooning safety standards across Brazil.

A Nation Grieves

The loss of life in this horrific balloon crash has left families shattered and a country in mourning. As investigations continue, many are calling for stricter safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
