Meet Winry: The Joyful Baby Raising Awareness for Rare Birthmark Condition
In a world that often celebrates sameness, it’s the differences that truly make us beautiful. And baby Winry, a cheerful and spirited toddler, is capturing hearts around the globe for exactly that reason. Born with an extremely rare condition called congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN), her story is not just inspiring—it’s helping raise much-needed awareness.
A Surprise at Birth
When Nicole Hall and her husband welcomed their daughter into the world, they were filled with joy—until a dark patch on her face gave them pause.
“When they first handed her to me, I thought it was a bruise,” Nicole told Good Morning America. “It was then quickly apparent to my husband and I that it was not a bruise. And like the name, I thought it looked a lot like a mole.”
Nicole, who had experienced a fairly smooth pregnancy, wrote on her blog that no tests or ultrasounds could have predicted what Winry would be born with. The moment the excitement of labor settled, concern set in.
“None of the nurses had said anything about it at this point, but I wasn’t sure what to ask so I just held her tight and loved on her,” she recalled.
What Is Congenital Melanocytic Nevi?
According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, CMN causes light brown to black patches that can appear anywhere on the body. These birthmarks vary widely in shape and size. In Winry’s case, it prominently covers part of her face.
While the condition can carry a low risk of melanoma, a type of skin cancer, the family is vigilant. Nicole ensures Winry wears hats outdoors and applies sunscreen religiously.
“Her health and happiness are our top priority,” Nicole explained. “I know our regular dermatology appointment is probably going to be our best friend growing up.”
Raising Awareness and Representing Differences
As Winry grows, her parents know she may face stares or questions. But instead of retreating from the world, they’re choosing to educate and celebrate.
“For a lot of people, this is the first time seeing a birthmark like hers and that’s part of why I enjoy sharing,” Nicole said. “It’s a good conversation for parents with their children—to see that kids have differences.”

Through their TikTok account, Nicole shares joyful moments of 13-month-old Winry. The videos have already reached thousands, and they’ve even connected with a family in Brazil whose son has an almost identical birthmark.
A Radiant Little Girl
What truly sets Winry apart isn’t just her birthmark—it’s her radiant spirit.
“She just radiates joy. She’s almost always laughing or shrieking,” Nicole shared. “She’s already getting a little bit of sassiness, so I think we’re gonna have a lot on our hands.”
With a big smile, a bright future, and parents who believe in her, Winry is teaching the world to love without condition.
