Melania: From Slovenian Small Town to World Stage—How Her Past Still Shapes Her Today

Melania Trump is unique in a world where celebrity frequently changes public figures because she has always maintained a certain level of mystery. Social media is flooded with comparisons between “then” and “now” as interest in her early modeling days resurfaces. In addition to her looks, people are drawn to her metamorphosis from a young girl from a sleepy Yugoslavian town to the future First Lady of the United States.

Her story is one of remarkable consistency as well as reinvention. Melania has maintained her composure, focus, and fierce privacy despite decades of celebrity, her marriage to one of the most divisive political figures, and the spotlight of the White House.

However, what does the beginning of this journey tell us about the woman who bears the name?

She was raised in Sevnica, which was then a part of Yugoslavia (now Slovenia), after being born Melanija Knavs on April 26, 1970, in the town of Novo Mesto. Far removed from the glamour of Paris, Milan, or New York, Sevnica was a small, industrial town dotted with textile factories and concrete buildings.

High-ranking factory directors were once chauffeured by Melania’s father, Viktor Knavs, a car dealer. An early link in Melania’s future fashion-forward fabric was her mother, Amalija, who was a patternmaker for a children’s clothing company.

She was raised close to her school in a small apartment complex. Mirjana Jelancic, a former headmistress and childhood friend, recalls her as “polite, quiet, and incredibly focused.”

She had very good manners and was an excellent student. She didn’t ever raise her voice. Jelancic said, “She always carried herself with grace.”

Melania stood out even as a teenager—not out of conceit, but because of her vision. She aspired to be a fashion designer and frequently redesigned vintage apparel. At one point, Jelancic remarked, “Sevnica was too small for her.”

The Beginning of a Dream and the Eye of a Photographer
Renowned Slovenian photographer Stane Jerko first saw Melania in January 1987 when she was just 16 years old in the Festival Hall in Ljubljana. She was awaiting a companion. She had symmetry, poise, and a subtle charm that he found appealing.

They had a casual first shoot. Nervous but eager, Melania brought her own clothes. Something clicked as she carefully followed instructions. There was a second shoot, this time using clothing that was manufactured in a factory. She became bolder and more self-assured with every session. The result was a model.

By her early twenties, she was booking shoots in Paris and Milan while learning five languages: English, French, Italian, Slovenian, and Serbo-Croatian. She eventually changed her name to Melania Knauss, and by 1996, she had come to New York City determined to succeed in the American fashion industry.

Melania met Donald Trump in 1998 while attending a party thrown by Paolo Zampolli, a modeling agent. Trump asked Melania for her number when he arrived with Celina Midelfart, another woman on his arm. Noting that he was already accompanied, she declined.

Trump, however, persisted. Soon after, they began dating, and the tabloids in New York were immediately captivated by them. They briefly parted ways in 2000 when Trump contemplated running for president under the Reform Party banner, but they quickly got back together.

Trump proposed at the glitzy Costume Institute Gala in 2004, following a well-publicized trip to Slovenia to meet her family. Barron William Trump, their son, was born a year after their January 2005 marriage.

Melania’s modeling career quickly came to an end, but her flawless style and quiet power never stopped drawing notice.

From the White House to the Catwalk
Melania stayed mostly out of the spotlight during the 2016 campaign, choosing to play a supporting role while her husband made headlines. In November 2015, she made her first significant appearance in South Carolina, where she informed the audience:

“Isn’t he the greatest? He is going to be the greatest president in history.

In a rare public show of affection from a couple known for their quiet chemistry, Trump replied with a kiss and a heartfelt thank you.

Melania did not immediately move into the White House after Trump was elected president. Rather, she stayed with Barron in Manhattan’s Trump Tower, attending to his education. Guests reportedly wore surgical booties to protect the marble floors in her penthouse, which was a quiet but strict lifestyle.

She had prioritized privacy over fame even before she became First Lady.

As the world observes, Sevnica responds
Melania’s origins came under intense scrutiny during Trump’s presidency. With wines and pastries with Melania themes, the town of Sevnica turned into a tourist destination.

However, responses were not uniform. Some residents were proud of the well-known former resident of their town. Others dismissed it.

A resident asked a reporter, “What does it mean to me if she is First Lady?”

She is still remembered with affection by photographer Stane Jerko:

She possessed a unique quality. I am aware of her great intelligence and talent.
