School teacher arrested in brutal killing of parents in state park

After a tense dayslong manhunt, Arkansas police have captured the man accused of brutally murdering a couple during a family hike at Devil’s Den State Park—a horrifying attack witnessed by their two young daughters, now left orphaned and traumatized.

Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, had only just moved their family to Prairie Grove, a quiet town near the Oklahoma border, hoping for a fresh start. Less than a month into their new life, tragedy struck.

On July 26, the couple and their daughters, ages 7 and 9, set out on a hiking trail. Hours later, a chilling call reached Washington County dispatchers:

“Two children are here… they say their parents were assaulted. One was possibly stabbed. The parents are missing.”

When police arrived, they discovered the unimaginable—both Clinton and Cristen had been stabbed to death along the trail.

A Mother’s Final Act of Bravery

Officials believe Cristen made the ultimate sacrifice to protect her little girls. According to investigators, she led them to safety before turning back to help her husband during the violent attack.

“We believe the mother took them to safety and then returned to help her husband,” said Maj. Stacie Rhoads of the Arkansas State Police.

The girls were unharmed physically, but their lives were forever shattered that day.

“They Died Heroes”

In a statement shared with NBC, the Brink family described Clinton and Cristen as loving parents who gave everything for their daughters:

“Clinton and Cristen died heroes, protecting their little girls. They deserve justice. They will forever live on in all of our hearts.”

A GoFundMe campaign created to cover funeral expenses paints a heart-wrenching picture of loss:

“Their lives were stolen senselessly and cruelly. This individual robbed these precious girls of their mom and dad… of grandparents robbed of their children. We want this person prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

By August 1, nearly $57,000 had been raised in an outpouring of public support.

The Arrest

Five agonizing days later, relief swept through the community when authorities announced they had arrested 28-year-old Andrew James McGann at a hair salon in Springdale.

Despite the location of the arrest, police do not believe he was attempting to alter his appearance.

“Could chalk that up to school starting next week,” Rhoads said.

The arrest came just one day after police released a composite sketch based on witness descriptions, which generated numerous tips from across the country.

Who Is Andrew James McGann?

Shockingly, McGann—recently relocated to Arkansas from Oklahoma—was a teacher. Springdale Public Schools confirmed he had been hired as a teacher candidate for the upcoming year but had not yet started.

District officials in Oklahoma revealed he worked as a teacher until May 2025, passing all standard background checks. His sudden connection to such a heinous act leaves unanswered questions about motive and warning signs that no one saw coming.

“A Monster Off the Streets”

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed gratitude to law enforcement while mourning the loss of the Brink parents:

“Nothing can heal the harm done to the Brink family, but this is a comfort and reassurance for our State. Let there be no mistake—if you target innocent people, Arkansas law enforcement will hunt you down and bring you to justice.”

Col. Mike Hagar of the Arkansas State Police added:

“Because of their tireless work, we were able to take a monster off the streets and bring relief to those two precious girls, and the rest of our citizens.”

Authorities believe the slaying was a completely random attack, with no known connection between McGann and the Brinks. The investigation remains ongoing as the community grapples with shock and grief.

Remembering Clinton and Cristen

As the nation followed every development of the manhunt, tributes poured in for Clinton and Cristen—two parents remembered for their courage, love, and sacrifice.

Now, as the legal process begins, one thing is certain: their story has touched countless lives, and their bravery will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Cristen and Clinton. Our thoughts and prayers remain with your daughters and loved ones. Please share your tributes and messages of support in the comments below so their family can feel the embrace of a community standing with them.
