My Son Spoke of His ‘Other Father’—I Wasn’t Ready for What Came Next

My five-year-old son Eli exclaimed, “Guess what me and my other dad did!” after returning from a weekend spent with my sister Lily. I thought he was acting when I laughed, but then I saw that he wasn’t. Everything I believed to be true was revealed in that moment.

Lily has always been my strongest ally and more than just a sister. She immediately stepped in after Eli was born, providing me with invaluable breaks and assistance during restless nights. I came to love their weekly Saturday adventures as a routine. However, Eli’s words struck a different chord that day, and my heart raced with fear and uncertainty.

Trent, Eli’s biological father, left before I even realized I was expecting, so Eli had never met him. I hadn’t mentioned him to Eli. So, who was this enigmatic “other dad” that he brought up?
