Donald Trump breaks silence on Taylor Swift engagement with unexpected joke

Donald Trump isn’t known for soft words — especially when it comes to Taylor Swift. And his reaction to her big news with Travis Kelce had some jaws hitting the floor.

Yesterday, August 26, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce shocked fans with a huge Instagram announcement: after two years of dating, they’re officially engaged. Naturally, everyone wanted to know — what would the President of the United States have to say about it?

It’s no secret Donald Trump and Taylor Swift have never been on friendly terms. Their feud has played out in public for years — and the history explains why his latest reaction to her engagement surprised so many.

Trump has taken repeated shots at Swift over time. Back in 2024, after the pop star publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for president, Trump went nuclear on his Truth Social account, posting: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” That wasn’t the only time he singled her out. Most recently, Trump praised actress Sydney Sweeney for starring in an American Eagle ad — one that stirred controversy after being compared to racist Nazi propaganda.

“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves. Go get ‘em Sydney!” he wrote. But he didn’t stop there. Trump quickly turned his attention back to Swift, adding: “Just look at Woke singer Taylor Swift. Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her (HATE!). She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT.”

Swift, for her part, has never been shy about where she stands on Trump. In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, she described his presidency as an “autocracy.” A year later, as protests swept the country after the killing of George Floyd, Swift took aim directly at Trump in a fiery post on X: “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? I will vote you out in November.”

But back to the engagement news. Speaking at a press event, Trump was asked about the pop superstar and the NFL tight end’s big announcement. His response was a mix of sharp humor and surprising warmth.

“Well, I wish him a lot of luck,” Trump quipped with a grin, sending the press pool into laughter. The joke landed quickly, but then he followed up with a more genuine tone.

“Nah, I think he’s a great player, I think he’s a great guy, and I think that she’s a terrific person. So, I wish them a lot of luck,” Trump added.

The moment came less than 24 hours after Swift and Kelce revealed their engagement in a post that has already racked up over 26 million likes. The news was so massive that FOX News interrupted its regular programming to cover it, while Google rolled out a special Easter egg with golden confetti falling across the screen when users typed in Swift’s name.

For Swift and Kelce, the engagement caps off two years of dating and comes after insiders revealed the couple had already been seriously discussing marriage and a family. As one source told US Weekly: “They want to be married and have kids in the future… they feel like they’ve found their person.”

And now, they’ve even got Trump’s seal of approval.
