Jimmy Fallon reveals his family’s ”first baby” has passed away: ”Miss you so much”

Jimmy Fallon, usually the face of laughter and lighthearted fun, revealed a deeply emotional side of himself this week — one marked by loss, love, and quiet heartbreak.

The Tonight Show host shared on Instagram that his family’s beloved golden retriever, Gary, had passed away after 13 beautiful years together. To Fallon, Gary wasn’t just a dog — she was family, their “first baby,” a constant source of joy, comfort, and unconditional love.

“She was the last name we signed on every birthday card,” Fallon wrote, capturing the depth of his grief in a single line.

He continued, painting a vivid portrait of her personality: “She was our first baby, a therapist, a pillow, a big sister, a schoolmarm, a comedian, a party girl, and a rebel.”

Fallon’s post included touching photos of Gary through the years — from her puppy days to cozy family moments with his wife, producer Nancy Juvonen, and their daughters, Winnie, 12, and Franny, 10. In one photo, Fallon lies beside Gary on a bright orange rug, both at peace. In another, the whole family surrounds Gary with flowers, smiles, and love.

“The house feels emptier without you,” Fallon wrote. “So quiet that it almost hurts. Slowly, that quiet is being filled again with memories of you and laughter between the tears. Thank you for everything you gave us. We miss you more than words can say. Goodnight, Gary.”

He reminisced about her silly habits — jumping into the pool moments after a bath, rolling in the grass, tongue out, paws kicking like a bunny. “She loved a good scratch and would lean into you if she liked you — though ‘if’ is generous,” he joked. “She did this for basically everyone.”

Fallon first met Gary in 2017 when she appeared on his show as part of a comedy skit. “She came out on The Tonight Show to do a bit. I think she was a political pundit,” he told People. “At the time, Nancy and I were trying to have kids, and I think this was just a thing to kind of distract us while we were working on that.”

The post was quickly flooded with love and condolences from friends, celebrities, and fans alike.

Actress Chrissy Metz commented, “I am so sorry to you and your family, Jimmy. 💔 Sure sounds like you were all beautifully changed by one another.”
Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman added, “So very sorry for your loss, Jimmy. Dogs are family.”
Fellow NBC star Al Roker, who recently lost his own pet, wrote, “We lost our fur baby last year and it still hurts. But what love!”
Actress Cheri Oteri shared, “I know that love and loss. I’m so sorry. We only get them for a short time, but they come to open our hearts.”
Even Jane Goodall’s account posted a gentle tribute: “Gary and Dr. Goodall will have great adventures together 🤍🌈🐾.”

Fans echoed those sentiments, with one writing, “Gary will continue to watch over all the Fallon family forever smiling ❤️,” while another said, “I loved seeing clips of Gary during your Covid shows — thank you for sharing her with us.”

For Jimmy Fallon and his family, Gary wasn’t just a pet — she was home, love, and laughter all rolled into golden fur. Losing her leaves an ache words can’t quite fill, but the memories she gave them will shine forever — bright, warm, and full of love. ❤️🐾
