Why Drivers Are Putting Salt in a Glass Inside Their Cars

A Mechanic’s Simple Trick: Put a Glass of Salt in Your Car

Salt isn’t just for seasoning dinner or melting snow on the driveway. According to many mechanics, it can also solve one of the most common car problems: excess moisture inside your vehicle.

Just place a small glass or cup of salt inside your car — and it starts working immediately.

Why Salt Works

Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it naturally absorbs moisture from the air.
In a closed space like a car interior, that makes it incredibly effective at:

Lowering humidity levels
Preventing fogged or misty windows
Reducing dampness on seats and carpets

It’s inexpensive, easy to find, and completely safe to use.

Bonus Benefit: It Helps Remove Odors

Dampness creates the perfect environment for bacteria, mildew, and lingering smells.
Air fresheners only cover odors — but salt tackles the source by drying out the moisture that causes them.

Cleaner air, less fog, fewer smells — all from a simple cup of salt.
