Rock Legend’s son dies suddenly at 52

Jackson Browne is facing a heartbreaking loss following the death of his eldest son, Ethan Browne. The 77-year-old singer-songwriter shared the devastating news on Wednesday, Nov. 26, confirming through a family statement on Facebook that Ethan — an actor, model, and creative force in his own right — has died at the age of 52. No cause of death has been released.

“It is with deep sorrow that we share that on the morning of November 25, 2025, Ethan Browne, the son of Jackson Browne and Phyllis Major, was found unresponsive in his home and has passed away,” the statement read. “We ask for privacy and respect for the family during this difficult time. No further details are available at this moment.”

For Jackson Browne, this loss carries particularly painful echoes. Ethan’s mother, Phyllis Major, married Browne in 1975 and died by suicide the following year at just 30 years old, leaving Ethan as a toddler. The tragedy marked Browne’s early life as a parent, and Ethan grew up under the public eye while navigating the weight of those early losses.

Ethan first appeared with his father on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1974 as an infant, later stepping into creative work himself. He explored acting, earning a small role in the 2004 Kate Hudson film Raising Helen, and built a successful modeling career working with designers like Isaac Mizrahi. In Mark Ronson’s memoir Night People, Ethan is remembered for his striking looks and quiet, introspective nature — qualities friends attributed to both his parents.

His passion for music remained a constant thread. Ethan launched Spinside Records, an extension of Jackson Browne’s independent label, Inside Recordings, leaning into the family’s artistic legacy while charting his own path. Browne also has a younger son, Ryan, now 43, whom he shares with his ex-wife Lynne Sweeney.

Jackson Browne himself is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices of the 1970s singer-songwriter era. Born in Heidelberg, Germany, on October 9, 1948, and raised in Los Angeles, he became a defining figure of the California rock scene. His catalog includes classics like “Doctor My Eyes,” “Running on Empty,” “The Pretender,” and “Somebody’s Baby.” His 1977 album Running on Empty became a cultural landmark, capturing life on tour with vivid storytelling that has endured for generations.

Over his decades-long career, Browne has earned multiple Grammy nominations, been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and become known not only for his music but for his environmental activism and humanitarian work.

Now, as he continues to write, record, and tour, he faces unimaginable grief with the loss of his firstborn son — a man who inherited both his artistic spark and a life shaped by profound beginnings.

The family has requested privacy as they navigate their mourning, leaving fans and friends offering condolences while remembering Ethan for the quiet talent and presence he brought into the world.
