Horrifying discovery in Nick Reiner’s hotel room after the suspected murder of his parents

Nick Reiner was taken into custody on Monday on suspicion of involvement in the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, following a fatal incident at the family’s Brentwood home on Sunday.

According to law enforcement, officers were called to the couple’s Los Angeles residence at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Sunday, where Rob and Michele Reiner were found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released full details regarding the cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Later that same evening, their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was located in South Los Angeles near the University of Southern California and taken into custody around 9:15 p.m. Police confirmed he is being held on suspicion of murder while investigators continue to gather evidence.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as “a tragic incident,” adding, “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the Reiners during this incredibly difficult time.”

While the exact sequence of events and potential motive have not been officially confirmed, several media outlets have reported that Rob Reiner and his son were involved in a heated argument shortly before the deaths. According to multiple sources, the disagreement allegedly occurred at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien on Saturday evening.

Reports indicate that Nick Reiner left the event afterward and checked into a hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning. Per TMZ, he arrived at The Pierside Hotel in Santa Monica at approximately 4 a.m., using his credit card to secure a room. Hotel records reportedly show that he never formally checked out.

An eyewitness cited by TMZ claimed Nick appeared agitated at check-in but did not show visible injuries or signs of having been in a physical altercation at that time. The outlet also reported that no blood was observed on his clothing or body when he arrived.

However, later Sunday morning, hotel staff reportedly discovered disturbing conditions inside the room. According to TMZ, employees found the shower area “full of blood,” with additional blood present on the bathroom fixtures. The room’s window was also allegedly covered with bed sheets. Following the discovery, staff contacted authorities.

On Monday, detectives from the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division were seen at the hotel collecting evidence and interviewing employees as part of the expanding investigation.

Further reporting has revisited Nick Reiner’s long-documented struggles with substance abuse. Past interviews and media accounts note that he had entered rehabilitation multiple times over the years, beginning in his teens. Some outlets, including the New York Post, have cited neighbors and unnamed sources suggesting that tensions within the family may have resurfaced recently over concerns about treatment and relapse. These claims, however, have not been independently confirmed by police.

At this stage, investigators have not released an official motive, nor have they detailed the evidence linking Nick Reiner to the deaths. Authorities have emphasized that the case is active and that conclusions will be based on forensic findings, witness interviews, and corroborated facts.

As the investigation continues, tributes have poured in for Rob Reiner — a towering figure in film and television — and for Michele Reiner, remembered by friends and colleagues as a creative partner and devoted mother.

The Reiner family has not issued a public statement beyond requests for privacy as they grieve an immense loss.
