My grandmother’s unusual habit involving onions – the pairing of onions and cloves

The combination of onions and cloves isn’t just a kitchen staple — it’s also a time-tested, natural way to keep insects out of the home. Used for generations in different cultures, this simple remedy helps repel flies, mosquitoes, and other unwanted pests without relying on chemical sprays or toxic products.

Onions are naturally effective at driving insects away thanks to the sulfur compounds they release when cut. These compounds produce a strong odor that insects find highly unpleasant. In addition, onions contain essential oils that intensify this repellent effect, making them particularly useful against flying insects that rely on scent to navigate.

Cloves, a familiar spice in many households, add another layer of protection. They contain eugenol, a powerful natural compound known for its insect-repelling properties. Eugenol interferes with insects’ sensory systems, discouraging them from entering treated areas. As an added benefit, cloves also have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities, making them a multifunctional ingredient beyond pest control.

Making this homemade repellent is quick and effortless. Start by cutting an onion in half. Insert several whole cloves into the exposed flesh, pressing them in firmly so they stay in place. Once prepared, place the onion halves in areas where insects commonly enter or gather — near windows, doors, kitchen counters, or outdoor-facing spaces.

The effectiveness of this method comes from scent. Together, the sharp sulfur aroma of the onion and the warm, spicy smell of cloves create an olfactory barrier that insects instinctively avoid. Unlike chemical repellents, which may cause irritation or pose risks to pets and children, this natural solution is completely toxin-free and safe for everyday use.

This approach is especially appealing for those seeking eco-friendly, budget-conscious alternatives to commercial pest control products. It requires only common household ingredients, produces no harmful residues, and can be refreshed easily by replacing the onion once it dries out.

In short, onions and cloves form a simple yet powerful natural repellent. Their accessibility, safety, and effectiveness make them an excellent option for maintaining a pest-free home while avoiding harsh chemicals — proving that sometimes the best solutions are also the simplest.
