Chapter 12: When Love Becomes Possession
“No,” Ethan said. “You wanted me.”
The difference hung in the air like a judgment.
Vanessa’s polished mask collapsed.
“She had everything,” she hissed, pointing at Lauren. “Your name. Your house. Your child. Your devotion. And she threw it around like it meant nothing.”
Lauren shook her head faintly. “I never even knew you hated me.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course you didn’t. Women like you never see the people standing in your shadow.”
Ethan stepped back as if her words had physically struck him.
There are moments when the soul sees the difference between love and hunger. Love protects. Hunger consumes. Love waits in truth. Hunger builds a throne out of lies and calls it destiny.
Ethan looked at the security guards.
“Call the police.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Ethan.”
He did not soften.
“Now.”
