“No!” Noah cried. “Don’t take me from Mommy!”
A murmur moved through the guests.
Vanessa’s jaw clenched.
“He’s confused,” she said quickly, forcing a brittle laugh. “Children say strange things when they’re upset.”
But Ethan Caldwell raised his hand.
And the entire room obeyed the silence in that gesture.
For the first time that evening, he was not looking at his fiancée.
He was staring at the housekeeper.
At the way she held his son.
At the way Noah buried his face against her shoulder as if he had found the only safe place in the world.
Something inside Ethan shifted.
