Chapter 1: The Note on the Table
One week before I was supposed to marry Robert, I woke to a silent house and an empty place beside me.
I had fallen deeply in love with him. He was gentle, attentive, and devoted to the ten young children he had been raising alone since his wife passed away. Loving Robert meant loving all of them, and by the time he proposed, I already felt as though we were a family.
That morning, however, his clothes were gone. So was his car. I was reaching for the telephone to call the police when I noticed a folded note on the kitchen table.
It contained only a few words: “I’m sorry. I can’t do this anymore.”
Robert had not merely canceled our wedding. He had left his children behind without an explanation.
My relatives urged me to contact foster care. They reminded me that the children were not legally mine and warned that keeping ten siblings together would consume my life.
