Chapter 4: Ten Sealed Letters
Anger swept through the room.
“He knew?” Daniel, the oldest, demanded. “He let you do everything alone?”
“Yes,” I said, because softening the truth would have dishonored what we survived.
The envelope also contained hospital records, copies of the surrendered parental rights, and ten smaller letters bearing the children’s names. Robert wrote that he had remained in treatment, worked as a cabinetmaker, and quietly followed their lives through public announcements and newspaper clippings.
He had saved money over the years, but admitted that money delivered after his death could never replace school concerts, illnesses, graduations, or the ordinary evenings when a father should have been present. His modest estate was to be divided among the children and me, but only if we wished to accept it.
“You owe me neither forgiveness nor affection,” his final paragraph said. “My last request is simply that you know Elaine did what I failed to do. She stayed.”
No one opened the smaller letters immediately.
