My Brother Locked Me Out of Mom’s Flower Shop—Then the Accountant Opened Her Blue Binder

Chapter 2: What Owen Hadn’t Said

Owen resisted until I reminded him that the delivery van, coolers, inventory, and business accounts belonged to my company under Mom’s will. Selling the building did not give him the right to throw them onto the sidewalk.

We met that afternoon with Mom’s accountant, Harold Pike, a soft-spoken man who had known us since we were teenagers. Owen arrived with a signed purchase agreement. The buyer was a developer planning to turn the shop into a coffee franchise.

“Why the rush?” I asked.

Owen stared at the tabletop. “Mara’s insurance denied part of her surgery claim. We borrowed against our house, and then my consulting contract ended.”

His wife’s operation had gone well, but I hadn’t known about the debt. Shame, not greed, was driving him. That softened my anger, though it did not excuse the lock or the secret sale.

“You should have told me,” I said.

“And listen to you explain how much more you did for Mom?” he replied. “I already know.”

Harold raised one hand. “Your mother knew both of you carried resentments. That is why she left instructions beyond the will.”
