My Brother Locked Me Out of Mom’s Flower Shop—Then the Accountant Opened Her Blue Binder

Chapter 3: Mom’s Quiet Preparation

The binder contained tax records, repair receipts, and copies of every payment I had made toward the shop’s roof, furnace, and accessibility ramp. Mom had documented all of it.

Behind those records was a notarized lease granting my business ten years in the building at a fixed rent. Attached to it was a right-of-first-refusal agreement. Before Owen could sell to anyone else, he had to offer me the property on the same terms.

Owen turned pale. “I never saw this.”

“It was recorded with the county,” Harold said. “The title search should have found it.”

The developer had pressured Owen to sign before completing that search. The sale could not close as written.

Then Harold handed us a letter in Mom’s looping handwriting.

She wrote that she had left Owen the building because she had helped me purchase the flower business years earlier. She believed the inheritance was fair, but she feared we would confuse fairness with victory. She asked Owen to respect my work and asked me not to treat his financial trouble as proof of bad character.

I read the last line twice: “Protect the family, but do not protect each other from the truth.”
