Chapter 4: The Truth in the Parking Lot

I found him sitting on the curb behind the shop, where Mom used to set buckets of sunflowers in summer.

“You won,” he said.

“This isn’t winning.”

He rubbed both hands over his face. “I told Mara I could fix everything. Selling the building was the only plan I had left.”

I sat beside him, leaving space between us. Owen admitted he had ignored two messages from Harold because he feared they would complicate the sale. He also admitted changing the locks was meant to intimidate me into leaving quietly.

“That was wrong,” he said. “I’m sorry.”

I believed the apology, but forgiveness did not require pretending no damage had been done.

“You don’t get to frighten me because you’re frightened,” I told him. “If we make an agreement, everything goes through attorneys. No surprise papers. No private deadlines.”

He nodded. “Fair.”

I could enforce the lease and remain for ten years while Owen struggled beneath his debt. I could also match the developer’s price, but that would empty my savings and place the shop at risk.

That evening, alone among the roses and carnations, I prayed for enough mercy to see Owen clearly—and enough wisdom not to rescue him recklessly. Continue Reading ⬇️
