Chapter 1: The Call He Overheard
I called my lawyer to change my will, and less than twenty-four hours later, my son appeared with a surprise that made my blood run cold.
For years, I had believed my family’s Sunday visits were about love. My son, Daniel, and his wife, Melissa, would drink coffee at my kitchen table, tighten loose cabinet handles, and ask whether I needed groceries. They always said they didn’t want me feeling alone.
So I arranged my estate accordingly. Daniel and Melissa would receive my house, while my savings would be held for my nine-year-old grandson, Noah.
Once the documents were signed, however, Sundays became strangely inconvenient. Daniel’s calls lasted two minutes. Melissa contacted me mostly when she needed a favor. Only Noah still hugged me as if seeing me were the best part of his week.
Finally, I called my attorney, Helen Brooks.
“I’d like to update my will,” I told her.
She scheduled me for Friday. As I hung up, I noticed Daniel standing silently in the hallway. He offered a thin smile and left without explaining what he had heard.
