Chapter 3: This Was No Getaway
Farther along the path, a woman reached for butterflies that weren’t there. Another resident sat on a bench, smiling and speaking softly to someone only she could see.
A chill moved through me.
A young employee came through the building’s side door carrying my suitcase.
“Hello, Evelyn,” she said warmly. “I’ll show you to your room.”
I turned toward Daniel. “When do the excursions start?”
He stared at the gravel instead of meeting my eyes.
“Mom, we’ll only be gone for a few days,” he said. “We found the best doctor for you.”
My stomach dropped. “Doctor? You said this was a family getaway.”
Neither Daniel nor Melissa answered.
In that silence, I finally understood. This was not a wellness prize. They had brought me to a residential memory-care facility, four hours from my home, on the morning after Daniel overheard me changing my will.
