Remembering when Mick Jagger handed Barack Obama the mic to sing Sweet Home Chicago at the White House

Barack Obama is frequently remembered as one of the most culturally engaged and charismatic leaders in modern history, a reputation cemented by his approachable and effortlessly cool presidential demeanor. That particular charm was on full display during the “In Performance at the White House” event held on February 21, 2012. Hosted in the historic East Room as a centerpiece of Black History Month celebrations, the PBS broadcast served as a grand tribute to the rich origins, deep traditions, and enduring legacy of American blues music. The evening featured an extraordinary, multi-generational assembly of world-class performers, including Mick Jagger, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr., Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi. The concert successfully underscored how blues music evolved from deep-seated traditions and personal struggle into one of the most influential and foundational artistic expressions in the United States.

The event reached its emotional and rhythmic peak during the ensemble finale of “Sweet Home Chicago,” a track that served as a fitting and poignant nod to the President’s own adopted home city. During the high-energy performance, blues legend Buddy Guy playfully beckoned the President to join in, referencing a recent viral instance where Obama had sung a few bars of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” This lighthearted encouragement followed earlier jokes from the President about needing to protect his electoral standing by potentially retiring from public singing. Refusing to let the moment pass, Mick Jagger stepped toward the front of the stage and extended his microphone directly to the Commander-in-Chief, effectively inviting him into the musical fold. It was a rare moment of spontaneity that bridged the gap between the highest office in the land and the soulful, gritty roots of the blues.

Respecting the musical icons gathered before him, Obama accepted the microphone and confidently sang a few lines of the legendary anthem. It was a spontaneous and historic moment rather than a rehearsed duet, with the President briefly joining B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Buddy Guy, and the rest of the all-star cast in a shared celebration of the genre. As he sang, Obama turned toward the seated B.B. King, inviting the blues pioneer to contribute a line before the President concluded the famous chorus. When Obama finally returned the microphone to the professional musicians, the room erupted in enthusiastic cheers and applause for the unexpected and joyous collaboration, marking a highlight of the evening.
