Long before he became a household name, Rory was a dedicated songwriter navigating the competitive landscape of Nashville. In 2002, he married Joey Martin, a talented country singer, and the two began building a life together. While they initially pursued separate professional paths—with Rory penning chart-topping hits like Blake Shelton’s “Some Beach” and Joey recording for Sony—their creative lives eventually converged in 2008. Encouraged by a friend, they auditioned for the CMT program Can You Duet. Finishing in third place, the couple launched a successful career as the duo Joey + Rory, earning a devoted following and releasing several albums that resonated with listeners across the country.
Their lives were forever altered in 2014 with the birth of their daughter, Indiana, who was born with Down Syndrome. Just two years later, in 2016, the family faced an unimaginable tragedy when Joey passed away following a courageous two-year battle with cervical cancer. She was only forty years old at the time. This period of their lives had been deeply marked by the poignant song “When I’m Gone,” featured on their 2012 album His and Hers. The track, which features Joey on lead vocals, offers a message of comfort from a dying person to those they leave behind. Although Rory was initially hesitant about the song’s concept, the lyrics eventually mirrored their own reality. Today, Rory finds solace in the music, viewing the video as a beautiful, constant reminder of Joey’s voice and spirit rather than a source of sorrow.
In the years following Joey’s death, Rory has embraced his role as a dedicated single father on their Tennessee farm. Surrounded by a supportive community that includes his two sisters, who live on the property, and his two daughters from his first marriage, he has focused on raising Indiana in a nurturing, stable environment. Indiana’s education takes place in a one-room schoolhouse located right on their farm, where she learns alongside other local children. Music remains a central pillar of their daily life, a tradition that began when Rory would sing and play guitar for Indiana as a baby. This musical bond has only strengthened as she has grown, with moments of them singing together frequently shared with their audience. When she was four, a video of Indiana singing along to one of her mother’s songs in the car was shared on social media, highlighting how deeply music is woven into their family history.
