Boy’s Choir Performs An Incredible Rendition Of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ Hitting 3 Million Views

Dagilėlis, a boys’ choir from Šiauliai, has become one of the most prominent choral groups in Lithuania and the wider Baltic region. The ensemble gives numerous concerts each year, with those appearances attracting hundreds of listeners from around the world. One performance that brought the choir considerable attention online was its rendition of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The featured video reached three million views, while recordings showcasing the group’s distinctive treatment of the song also gained thousands of views and circulated widely enough to be described as semi-viral.

The performance takes an unconventional route into the familiar number. Rather than opening immediately with the recognizable introduction, the boys first create an imagined jungle through vocal sound effects. Monkey calls form part of this preliminary scene, accompanied by additional noises intended to establish the setting. The choir allows that extended opening to unfold gradually before making the transition into the song itself. It is a lengthy introduction, but it serves as the defining feature of Dagilėlis’s version and sets up the eventual arrival of the well-known opening passage.

Once the opening soundscape has been established, the singers slowly build toward “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and begin the main rendition. This progression—from animal noises and other atmospheric effects into the familiar composition—gives the performance its individual structure. The recording’s online success was associated with both that unusual introduction and the choir’s broader approach to the material it performs. The same special treatment of songs is also credited with keeping concert audiences applauding during the group’s appearances.

Dagilėlis’s identity is closely connected to its home city. The culture of Šiauliai is presented as deeply rooted within the ensemble and central to its performances, rather than as something separate from its musical activity. That connection remains part of the choir’s work as it performs outside Lithuania. Through its repertoire and international concert schedule, the group presents Lithuanian culture to listeners in the various countries it visits while maintaining Šiauliai at the heart of its performances.
