I found Daniel reading beneath the living-room lamp. When he looked up, I placed my phone on the coffee table.

“I found your profile,” I said.

His face drained of color. He closed his book but did not reach for the phone. “Laura, I can explain.”

“Then explain everything. Don’t protect me from it.”

Daniel admitted creating the account after hearing me apologize to a nurse for needing help walking. He had searched caregiver forums first, but their empty rooms and clinical answers left him desperate. The dating site connected him with people willing to talk privately, including survivors and spouses who had endured long illnesses.

“I said I was married,” he told me. “I never arranged a meeting. But I hid the account, and I let some conversations become more personal than they should have. I kept telling myself my reason made the secrecy acceptable.”

His honesty hurt because it contained both devotion and poor judgment. He had not been planning to leave me, but he had invited strangers into a struggle he would not discuss with his own wife.

“You were trying to rescue me without asking what I needed,” I said. “And you frightened me badly enough that I pretended to be someone else just to test you.”

Daniel lowered his eyes. Neither of us looked innocent in that moment, but neither of us was beyond mercy.

“No more hidden accounts,” I said. “No more secret tests. If we stay married, we face difficult things in the same room.”

He nodded. “I’ll delete it tonight. And if you’re willing, I think we need help learning how to talk again.”
