Before Daniel deleted the account, we reviewed the conversations together. It was uncomfortable, but I needed truth rather than reassurance. Most people had offered simple suggestions: celebrate small victories, ask before helping, and never confuse illness with identity.

One message came from Renee, a cancer survivor in Ohio. Daniel had mentioned her often enough that jealousy flared before I could stop it. He handed me the phone without becoming defensive.

Renee’s words were direct. She had warned him not to make himself my secret savior. Love, she wrote, could become another kind of cage when one person decided what healing should look like for the other. She had urged him to speak honestly with me and find a qualified counselor.

Daniel had saved that message for six months but never followed it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

“Because you were surviving,” he said. “And because I was afraid you’d hear my fear as regret.”

I understood that fear. I had hidden mine for the same reason. Every time I called myself a burden, I was quietly asking him to deny it instead of allowing him to admit that caregiving was difficult. He deserved room to be tired without being mistaken for unfaithful. I deserved to make choices about my own recovery.

We deleted the account together, but deletion was not absolution. Daniel scheduled counseling, and I agreed to attend. Before bed, we each wrote one sentence on a scrap of paper. His read, “I cannot help you honestly from behind a locked door.” Mine read, “Needing care does not cancel my voice.”
